Umlaut's temp never goes above 175.

Is this good or bad?

175C might be a problem, however, 175F is 79.4C.

I think you should be able to find the thermostat opening temperatures (are the stamped on them?) and check them in a pot of water.

80C doesn't sound bad at all. Mine's usually between 80 and 90C when warmed up.

Seems normal

My 240D runs at about this temp when warmed up.Tends run a bit hotter when pulling long grades but cools off on the downhill quickly.
I am pretty sure the previous responder is correct that the thermostat is an 80C unit.

175F.

Ahhhh.

Even though my heater fan doesn't work, I stay nice and toasty when the car is moving. I get heat faster than my '06 Dodge Ram.

I was concerned that my temp never went above 175 also. Just for grinns I took it out and ran it hard up a long hill. It climbed to about 180. I jumped out with my thermometer to get a temp reading but the fan came on and the temp went back down. BTW the thermo switch is the one with the low setting (185?) not the 200 degree + setting.
