I was so surprised by the availability and low cost of NOS MB parts for vintage models...

I have a '66 912. Parts are still available from Porsche and many aftermarket suppliers. The 912 body is the same as the early 911 and the engine is almost the same as the late 356. Yes, parts are expensive. There is also a very active user community that can help with technical questions.

From the standpoint of an honest MB technician, Vegetable oil is a threat to your diesel engine's mechanical integrity.

Not to go off topic, but the first newscast I ever read on the air had a story that took place in Kosciusko and I had no clue on how to pronounce it.

I've been in broadcasting since '75...College radio, regular radio (paycheck and goofy hours), telephone installation/repair technician, IATSE-Union pleab, Radio Station Automation R&D and manufacturing, Tower-climber (antenna and transmission-line re-furbishing), Television engineer, Assistant Chief and currently, Chief Engineer. And, on the side, I do contract work for various other radio stations (pretty much able to pick my own level of "poison" (and I MEAN "POISON"!!) and for slow times, security work at local venues for concerts, sporting events, community events (involving alcohol...I have a MEAN "I.D." demeanor...).

I bought my first MB (W123) back in Nov. of '05 and recently, my second MB (W107) this past November...

BTW, I've noticed the "snobbish" attitude of some MB owners when passing other MBs of a different series...it's more about the makeup of THAT particular owner than a particular "series-vs.-series" issue.

Sorta' like bikers...when one passes another, you notice the singular guy and it seems, ALWAYS, that there's a "single wave" of the clutch hand to the other guy...

I haven't had the SLC long enough to see what the atitude is out there yet...but rest assured, I won't be giving any other MB-guy a look up my nose when we pass each other, regardless the condition of his ride or mine in comparison.

These are unique vehicles, regardless the series or year. Anyone that has an MB attached to his or her nether-regions understands the reason they are behind that wheel in the first place.

If they don't, it's probably because "Daddy" either gave them the ride, or someone else is paying the bills and driving these beautiful cars is just a activity in "their day" - those are the ones that have nose hairs that need trimming...

i always got friendly nods here in los angeles when driving the w108 ("69 280s) from other w108 owners of that era, tho not so many with the w126 ("84 500sel)

for the record, presently i am a very underemployed house/studio/set painter, who previously managed paint stores for a large, regional paint/induustrial coatings/paint equipment manufacturer/distributor [dunn-edwards], after earning a b.a. in comparative literature??; began my academic career as a pre-med student, but, that's another story. i enjoy the wonderful contradiction of finding myself - often, but not always- on the left/non-traditional side of most arguments, yet sharing the passion for vehicles [mercedes-benz] of a certain era which are, arguably?, often seen as representative of more traditional, elite conservative mindset. in other words, appreciation for quality and style transcends all.

What I always thought was funny about the sometimes attitude, is the cars are ALL the SAME stuff. One of the things I love about Mercedes is the congruity among models of an era. Maybe it's from selling car parts the last ten years or so. The 70's cars are the same, the 80's cars are the same, even the early 90's(where my intimate knowledge gets off the boat). That's why the "what's this worth" kinda things are so funny in a way, a w114 for instance is pretty much the same stuff as a w108, people can't tell the difference unless they are beside one another. W123/126 it was a little more obvious the more "up scale" appointments, sort of. I suspect that was intentional since Americans couldn't see why a 108 cost so much more than a 114 for instance in generations past. Same with the SL's, just passed one at a gas station tonight and reminded me of it since I've seen him around town before. I don't care what you paid for that car buddy, it's the same old euro junk as my $1500 280 is. And I love em.

I'm an otherwise unemployed Navy Reserve Construction Mechanic who's been taking long-term orders off and on to an EOD unit while I wait for my next mobilization to roll around. In other words, EOD techs take trucks out and beat them like rentals, then I get to fix them, or order parts and wait (eternally) for our supply system to get them.

In the past I've been a junkyard worker, worked in a mushroom spawn factory, and designed and performed destructive tests on automotive systems. Oh, and truck driver, and pizza delivery guy. And that's just what I've done since I got out of college five years ago.
