79 280CE w123 fuel injected six starts then stops
When key switch turned to start, engine fires/starts, but as soon as I release key to run, it stops immediately. (If I hold key in start, engine stays running, but not good for a engaged starter dragging along!) Could it be the ignition switch, or am I missing a bad relay/module under the hood? I already pulled the electric half of switch out, but no way of testing. I have all of the service manuals, and looked at the ignition wiring diagram as well as the complete electrical diagram. Any thoughts, or has anyone had this problem? Thanks for your help, Al.

To me it sounds like the fuel pump relay or the ignition.
After you release the key from the starter position does it return to the correct spot? Post some pictures of your 280CE, we'd love to see it.

Is there a start and separate "run" resister on this one? The "run" one may be disconnected or bad. It's either fuel or fire.

That fixed my 280 doing the same thing.

Yes, my 79 280CE does have two resistors. When I'm holding switch in start position, engine stays running(fuel and ignition) so why when I release key to run it stops? Key position does go back to run position. Seems like the switch, but could it be one of the changeover relays? Thanks, Al.

Those are ballast resistors(they take 12V and turn it into about 6V releasing heat energy) for the ignition system pretty sure the ignition switch doesn't have anything to do with those.
To me it sounds like a ignition switch issue, but lets have someone elses opinion first.
