oil change 1970 2.8

I'm changing the oil in my 1970 280SE- FI 2.8 six.. I've got a topsider and ordered the oil filter(s). (one spare). Any tricks I need to know about? What is the recommended oil/weight?
Thanks

I would use Rotella T 15W-40 or Castrol 20W-50.

Where is the car, FL or NY?

FL. I've spent the last two weeks detailing and driving the car nearly everyday. My father passed away and now I have a newer chevy venture van, and I do not need four cars. I have to sell either the wife's 82 300TD or the 70 280SE, or both.

Sell the Chevy and keep the MB's, LOL.

Yeah use either of those oils I mentioned. Mobil Delvac 15W-40 is also pretty good, thats what I used in my 79 280CE.

Yep, 20W50 is specifically listed in the manual and FSM.

I would go with the 15W40. It's what I use in my M130. I wouldn't use an oil that isn't diesel-rated in a car without roller cam followers.

I bought some Pennzoil 10-40- is that gonna work okay or should I save it for the chevy? Are you saying I can use the same oil as my 617 diesel in the 2.8? How many quarts?

I'd put Rotella in the 280SE, just my opinion.

you'll need about 7 quarts.

Oil capacity on the M129-M130 calls for no more than 6.5 liters maximum. Recommended max is 5.5 L without oil filter; 6 L w/ oil filter.
I recommend top off first with minimum 5 liters and monitor dipstick... continue on until you reach the proper range as seen on the dipstick.

I assume the "nut" on the end of the filter housing- which in on the drivers side near the steering box- is what loosens the housing. This is horizontal- how much oil will spill out?

Yep there is a 17mm nut that holds the canister in. Loosen the bolt and let it drain before you pull it out completly. About 1 quart will come out.

Here's a visual on your M130.980, in case you need to verify how the components assemble back together:

When changing the oil make sure to drain the cooler. It probably holds a quart (the one on my 4.5 does). You don't want to recycle a quart of dirty oil back in - it's bad enough these older engines hold onto a fair amount of the old stuff as is.

As to what vehicle you want to sell: Is the Venture going to live past 15 years, nevermind 40? You can probably hold on to the MB until such time that we no longer drive gas-powered vehicles, as long as it doesn't rust out.

When changing the filter, make sure there are rubber pieces above and below the filter. These pieces aren't included with filter kit and you want to make sure they are present to ensure proper filtering. At the risk of confusing you, the diagram below was prepared by the sl113.org guys but applies to 108's as well. In short, make sure parts #37 and #39 are present and in decent shape.
