WOW!! What a difference

Just thought that I would post a fuel system success in spite of some naysayers. In this case tenacity paid off.

I've been fussing over my '72 280SE 2.8 barn find starting on most of the cylinders and then picking up the rest within a few seconds of startup. Starting on most of the cylinders was not as much of a concern as gas washing down the cylinders from bleeding injectors. I contacted the injection shops in town to see if they would service the injectors. All said NO.

All was not lost. While prowling around the big city I spied an injection shop on a back road that was not in the Yellow Pages. As it turns out at one time he serviced the MB fuel system and was willing to give it a try.

The next day I delivered the injectors. What was disappointing is there was rust inside of the injectors. All of the injectors bled down and none had any kind of a spray pattern. The injectors are the non-serviceable type. The guy at the injection shop told me that it's no problem for his "secret" process. Good enough for me. When he returned the injectors to me he said that all of the injectors will hold 235lbs without leaking.

Well I installed the injectors last night. Oh man what a difference. The car drives much nicer than before. The best part is that it started on 6 cylinders this morning. In this case I was able to avoid buying $600.00 worth of injectors to accomplish the same thing.

That is good new man.... Some of those small time shops don't have as much "overhead" as others and they can do some pretty amazing things for half as much as other shops. I also like the more personal "atmosphere" of the smaller shops too.

I remember when I lived up in St. Augustine... There was a small local shop that worked similar miracles. One up in downtown J'ville too. I think it is safe to say that they are "few and far between".

I always advise injector service, pop test, refurbish or other as one of the first steps in reviving these ol gals, amazing how many problems come from this very issue.

The only replacable part is the copper washer that seals the inj to the head. I just used them over.

He has a 280 engine - I think it had mechanical injectors. Which car/engine do you want to order seals for?

Mines 4.5 dJet blue injectors. I need to remove one to troubleshoot, but am reluctant to remove until I have the proper parts to reinstall. My number 5 cylinder spark plug looks like the day I installed it. Either no gas, or maybe bad valve. It gets spark. I was just going to remove injector, and turn over and check for flow.

You cant turn just 1 injector over safely w/o bending the fuel rail... at least not enough to test spray pattern. best thing to do is remove all 8, with 8 canning jars (1 below each), disconnecting power to the coil (better to be safe than sorry) and have someone crank while you watch the spray patterns.

The "lower seals" are all you'll need. The upper "Seals" aren't seals - they're retaining washers. 8 lower seals - put them into the heads first, and moisten the injector tips and seals with some water or silicone lubricant (not grease) to slide them back in when done. Make sure to vacuum out as much crud as you can from that area before removing the injectors. $1.17 each seal:

The blue d-jet injectors are rebuilt easier than the mechanical injectors the OP has on his 280SE m130.

Thanks Tom. I got 8 of those ordered. Wouldn't be opposed to changing the upper for just $1.42 each, if at all needed. I really just want to see if the suspect injector is working at all. Is that feasible without removing all? Later I would like to take all 8 out and send to a cleaning/ rebuild shop. I have seen around 25 a piece, which seems pretty fair. Would like to isolate problem before removing valvecover to check valves. Any other ideas welcome, I'm not sure why there seems to be no fire in that cylnder, I have verified spark visually though.

Are seals for yellow injectors (3.5 M116 engines) same as for blue injectors (4.5 M117 engines)?

Peachparts does not list 111.026/0.27 vehicles at all in their catalog and I could not find injector seals under 109 3.5 liter car.

They sure are. MANY m116 3.5 parts are the same - even piston rings and valves - as m117 4.5s.
