Can I use a clutchless fan, 1972 300SEL 4.5?

Gute abend!

Water pump bearing failed, allowed the fan to misallign, so that
the blades hit soild steel, chipped up the blades on the fan pretty bad.
radiator seems ok.
I can by a universal clutchless light weight fan, that will fit the
simple 4-bolt pattern on the pulley/waterpump (I already put in the
new water pump. . Jesus, what a pain!)
Am I asking for trouble using a clutchless fan? That stock fan
clutch/fan blade assembly is a BEAST of cast aluminum.

Thank you,
Silverbenz

YOu can use a clutchless, but it will make a lot of noise on the highway and rob power and fuel mileage. I might think about looking at balancing the present fan by removing material from blades opposing the damaged ones so it is balanced. I did that on my 62 190c. I actually removed a whole blade when I broke one off in a water pump incident. Worked fine. I had two functional blades as I remember....looked like a little airplane.

I wouldn't use a clutchless fan. I also would not chop blades off the fan, the 4.5 tends to run rather warm in summer traffic as is, lowering the volume of air it sucks through the radiator is asking for trouble. I'm sure you could find a good used fan/clutch assembly on ebay or at a dismantler for cheap! The same assembly is used on all 108/109 4.5's (it is different from 3.5's, at least 111 chassis 3.5's) and even some 107 and 116's I bet.

Silverbenz,

After replacing my failed fan clutch last summer, I was surprised in the pretty big difference it made in keeping the car cool, especially with the A/C on. And I also second the point about fuel economy. It's hard enough to keep these Djet cars from drinking so much fuel as it is!

I have a good blade I'll sell you for $75 plus shipping. I also have a nearly new clutch assembly, but look on this site for my piece on converting to a theromostatically controlled electric fan set up.

Thank you, I will use a stock fan blade then.

Mine is too damaged to re-balance. I was literally leaving a trail
of aluminum down the freeway. The fan-clutch seems fine.
I'll try to find a good used one from my local sources, if no luck, will
purchase the one offered here.
Thank you gentleman, as always!
Viele danke!
