1971 280 sel shifting

Hey as most of you now know Since it's been a while since I drove her. I was curious about how the car should shift. There is no slippage or lag but I have heard there is a pedal to shift to first under the gas. Is this true cause I don't see anything lol. Can anyone give me an example on how the car should shift from gear to gear. Any any tips on manually shifting with the floor shift knob. My thing is I just seems like the car want's a fith gear but there is not one.

make sure your in D and not 2nd gear, you should here it gear up three times. Drives and shifts better when you give it some gas. Don't grandma it around.

It's a switch, not a pedal. I'm not sure if your car is equipped with it, but a lot of the vintage cars start out in 2nd gear instead of first. Pushing the pedal all the way down engages the switch which causes it to down shift to 1st gear. If your car feels like it needs a fifth gear then you are either not shifting into top gear (count the gear changes as you pull away from a stop) or more likely you're driving an old car that is going to be seeing 4,000 rpm while you cruise down the highway.

Nik - Not sure which engine you have but with a 3.5 V8 at about 6000 RPM in 4th they should be doing about 120 MPH so at 60MPH half of that. The Benz design concept has (with a few exceptions) been smaller high revving engines that can run at high revs all day.
