headlight wiper arms

havent been on the forum much lately - been very busy at work, lots of local and international travel. however on of my local trips i found a euro spec 450slc. It was cheap so i bought it for some spare euro headlamps, bumpers 4.5 liter euro spec motor etc.
when i got it home i discovered a few oddities - the first being it had headlamp wipers and washers on the bumper. does anyone know what wiper arms would fit on these wiper drives? there were no arms on the car when i bought it.

Now that I have had more time to look at it I might just look at restoring it, its just that it will be #4 and push my total to 12 cars and SWMBO is getting very ansi about them cluttering up the property.
here are some pictures - any help on the headlamp wiper arms greatly appreciated.

the headlamp wiper system

the washer jets on the bumper

nice euro bumpers

genuine original seat heater buttons

the radiator with the built in oil cooler

cheers

Hi,

Looks like you've still got the little metal blocks that the wiper fits onto, I think Mercedes moved to individual motors for each side on later models so wipers arms are probably not the same but I'm no expert.
I did spend a fair amount of time getting mine to work and you'll probably find that the steel rods are rusted solid inside the tubes and they're no longer available new. I'd take it apart and make sure you can free them up before spending much time looking for the arms.
Here's a short video of the mechanism working:

Thanks Gary - they are new to me, I didnt even know the slc's came with them at all. I will pull them off today and see if they are loose. then its off to the junkyard to start looking at arms. Do yours actually lock to the square block and then bolted down or is there some other mechanism to lock them down?
cheers

sorry Jim but yes. I had to go to my CD and checked under heated seats and there was a picture of them. they are 2 position as well position 1 runs them in series and puts out 15W and position 2 runs them in parallel and they put out 60W. Just put some aftermarket heater pads in my euro 350sl so those buttons are heading into that

Hi Barri,
The arms have a U shape at the drive end which slides over those blocks, a nut then sandwiches the arm to the block which is pushed up the tapered shaft which should have a toothed surface to grip the block. Its all typically over-engineered but its because when the bumpers are in place there isnt enough space to pull the arms off the end of the shaft to change them so this lets you loosen the nut and slide the arm upwards off the block.
To be honest most of us probably don't let our cars get dirty enough to need these cleaners operating but its cool to watch them work in the reflection of the car in front.

Cheers,
Gary

P.S. Those three bolts you can see on the side of the engine bay in your last picture hold the headlight wiper motor.

Hi Barri,

Sounds like you've got your hands full with or without the SWMBO, yes its my video. There's limited information online about the headlamp wipers so thought I'd video mine working while I was fixing it. I had to soak the tubes in WD40 for nearly a week before they free'd up enough to pull them out.
I've got another posted on Youtube with me driving my SLC around Dublin if you're really bored ;-)

Cheers,
Gary

This might help. The headlight wiper mechanism gets stuck for lack of use and can be overhauled at little cost. Here is a link to a member Silversaloon blog with superb writeup and step-by-step overhaul. Due to Euro headlamp glass it is very rare these wipers in USA but can be sourced on ebay Germany and UK. They can also be ordered via MB USA. 9will take a picture of the wipers in mine and post later.

Thanks Gary - many years since I was last in Dublin - I will have a look to see if there is anywhere I remember!
great link deltacom - I didnt even think of checking on EPC. first job will be to leave it all soaking in wd40. from Gary's video and the link it looks like the mechanism is very similar to the wheel boxes on old triumphs and mg's
cheers

My 84 280SL also has the wiper setup, but the arms were pulled when the car was federalized and the USA lights installed.

Are the arms still available?

Got to go out in the shop and see if the rest of the stuff is in place.

AFAIK, the W107 arms are unique and of course, only work with euro lights.

As for the heater controls, Bosch supplied them as a kit for plenty of cars.
My friend Jaime has one that has followed him from car to car for the past decade.
