Vacuum Changeover Switch
We are dealing here with a 1971 280se 108018 6 cylinder automatic - I am confused about how the vacuum changeover swith is supposed to work with the vacuum advance. I replaced all my vacuum lines and while reading in the manual how the switch works, I decided to connect vacuum directly to the distributor advance thinking the distributor would be advance all the time, not just above 2400 RPM. After doing this, I seem to have read somewhere on this forum that connected in this manner, the distributor would be retarded all the time. Can someone set me straight on this and do I just need to reconnect the switch as MB intended and wait until 2400 RPM to advanced ignition?
Thanks Jerry

Unless you have two vacuum ports on the distributor vacuum canister, it is a vacuum retard, not vacuum advance. The changeover switch is what controls this. I just plug the vac. hose at the distributor so it looks stock, but does not retard the timing.
