anyways, I found this car up here in the northeast. not sure if its a member of this forum or not, but i REALLY like the look of it. Doesnt run, been sitting a couple years in storage. Rust through one of the rockers, owner says the floors are solid. What are major issues i could run into with this thing. The price seems pretty reasonable. (sub 2k)

So tell me what you know, oh great Mercedes fellows...

What happened to the dual exhaust..new pics dont show it.. was very curious

Is it floor or column shift? Mine's a floor shift model and was extremely sloppy as well (I had to jam the shifter into the seat to get it into reverse) but I replaced the shifter bushings and now it is tight and easy to shift.

There are approximately 8 bushings in there and only two of them were still in place on mine. There's a 2 piece split ball socket bushing set that goes around the shifter ball--these are $5 a piece. The other bushings run about $10 a piece, I believe, except for the two on the shift rod at the transmission end which are $25 a piece. The bushings on the transmission end can be accessed by removing a cover plate on the transmission tunnel. If your car is a column shift model then this doesn't apply as much.

Enjoyed your photo documentary. I'm sure your co-pilot enjoyed the trip very much too.

I was skeptical about the rear window defroster being factory. I took a look at the Mercedes EPC, and lo and behold, it was a factory option. I have never seen a W110 body with a rear window defroster. It must be a pretty rare option.

The sloppy shift pattern is most likely due to bad plastic bushings in the shifter mechanism linkages and maybe the socket for the lever itself. The bushings just fall apart with age, but luckily they're cheap and easy to replace. Easy and rewarding fix.

I know the bumper overrides that Squiggle Dog mentioned where optional in the early years of the W110, but were likely standard by the end of the production run. I suspect your front bumper was replaced sometime in the past with one from an earlier year. I've seen the rubber padded ones that Squiggle Dog has on his car on a car that obviously had the bumper replaced with a new one due to a wreck. Don't know if they are aftermarket or Mercedes replacements.

Looks like it has the newer 14" wheels. Probably a good thing as the original 13" tires are getting harder to find. And with those wheel covers it very closely mimics the look of the original hub caps and wheel rings.

For that price I'm sure you won't regret the purchase. They are fun and unique cars. A 230 with a manual is one car I've always thought about owning, but have never come across one where I'm from.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the info guys!

It is a floor shift car, which i was hoping itd be column as ive never driven one... oh well. spent the day working on it today and got it to fire up. Its REALLY difficult to get it running. Im assuming between not being tuned. Me not knowing exactly the proper times to choke it and un choke it and using a little bottle of fuel under the hood until i can get the gas tank drained... That and im spoiled with fuel injection .

Once i got it running it idled at about 3500 RPMS wich is a tad high... though it ran smooth and all cylinders. Clutch is nice and smooth. exhuast is non existant... PO said that the owner before him had the duels on it. said they looked like swiss cheese so he took them off.

Theres alot of little things done to the car. such as a tape deck a CD deck and an amplifier control unit...

I havent even bothered to try and figure out that mess...

Gave it a bath today though it needs another, washed the windows good as i am a stickler for clean windows...

More pics to come.

Thanks for the pics and story line - it sounded like a nice adventure - You seemed to have good company for the trip.

Very nice looking car -How do you plan to use it , and how long do you think it will take to get a finished product ?

Again I'm just copying and pasting from the volvo forum but its still a good post, here goes,

Well, after about an hour of parading it around my home town i finally decided to drop the car at my house, after a quick wash.

Got it pushed off of the trailer and into my driveway. Dropped the uhaul trailer off and returned my dads truck.I left the car on the trailer and everything still connected to the truck last night so i could just drop the dog off at my dads house and mess with everything else in the day light.

So, pulled a plug, Brand new.
Put a little oil down either carb for extra lube on start up.
Oil looked good in pan.
Removed fuel line from tank side of fuel pump.
Small gas can with line placed in engine compartment.
Unhooked coil wire.
Hooked jumper cables to battery.
Everything works in the car!
Continue messing around with all the german engineered gadgets.
Turn the key to start position.
Be amazed at how smooth the motor turned over, 19 psi during cranking.
Check valve cover, nice and oily on the inside now :-D

It's go time...

Coil wire connected,
Splash of gas down either carb and primed the bowls.
Key to start.
Turns over like a sun of a gun until after about 5 minutes i figured i should pull the choke...
Fires up nice and smooth...
Listen as idle starts to climb even with choke released
Steady idle at 3500rpms...
Yick.
Moved it up and down the drive way a little bit and it tries to stall.
Most likely has alot to do with very little gas available to the motor.
Spent some time, read up on carb tuning in the manual.
Double checked presets and they were good.
Fired it up one more time.
Decided to call it a day on the engine stuff.

As it sits, today was successful. Got the car off the trailer, washed, started AAND moving under its own power.

Mom comes home all pissy. Great there goes my good mood, whenever i get happy and feel good she ****s all over it, thats another story though.
"Wered you get this? Is this where you went yesterday"
"Yes i was in Vermont today, would you like to sit in it?"
"I guess. What's it worth?"
at this point I wanted to shut her face in the door...

so any ways i shoo'd her off and went back to detailing and such. Heres some pics!

Too many stereos..

Dirty door sill. I wiped a little off in the middle to show how clean it could be.

STILL dirty and pollen covered ALREADY!!

Pretty sure the car was originally maroon. Sometime in its past the rear deck inside was cut and 2 ten inch speaker boxes were fastened in. Prime spot for subs... ill have to watch for craigslist goodies. Also the front kick panels were cut out for 6x9's...

I cant really complain because if I do decide to cut it up a little more I wont feel like I'm chopping up a mint original car.

Wow, someone really loved that car! The numbering on the shift knob usually wears off quickly, but it's still readable on yours. Nice seats, too. I love the 3 head units under the dashboard! Good idea, but I have an A/C unit in the way in mine. You definitely got more car than I did for the $1,200.

GREAT POST

What is it with the wives'? Why don't they appreciate our discriminating eye , our interest on older cars requiring a " bit " of maintenance ?
A couple of hours of work and a few dollars spent of the household budget
Who cares that the bathroom upstairs has a drain clogged - the bathroom downstairs still works
some people ( wives in particular) have a ODD sense of priorities..........

again congratulations on your purchase - it looks great and I think you saved me $1200 - because I'da bought that one !

Did you say "Mom" like your mother? Or "Mom", mother of my children? If it is your mother that does not approve, blow it off because you will only hear criticism this one time. If your wife doesn't approve, you might as forget getting laid until she gets a new convertible.

My wife went with me to look at my 1962 220Sb when it was on Craig's list. She was probably my greatest bargaining chip. The seller had to notice her screaming at me and stamping her feet in a rythymic "no, No, NO, NOOOO!!" Followed by "Where do you think you are going to park THAT?", "NOT in front of our HOUSE!!". After the dirty looks and temper tantrum we started to leave, saddling up on our Harley motorcycles. I ran back and asked the seller what would be the absolute lowest price? "The junk yard offered $1,000.00 but I would rather see someone restore it than crush it" We shook on a secret deal and I was back two weeks later with a trailer, air compressor and cable wench. I parked the car a mile from the house in my rented storage facility. My wife did get a brand new Volkswagen EOS convertible. I still have a set of testicles.

Ha Ha... Ok. That was slightly embellished for dramatic effect. My wife didn't raise her voice or stamp her feet, but the dirty looks from her had the same effect on me.

Does your 230 have duel Zenith carbs? My car has duel Solex carburetors which were rebuilt with kits that cost $50.00 each. It ran much better after rebuilding the carbs, adjusting the timing and the valves. My car will burn rubber... Lots of torque!

You have an awesome car! Enjoy it! You can make the car reliable as a baseball bat with some basic mechanical skills and the information resources available here.

What is above the clock? Is that the ash tray? Is it missing the wood? Are you going to restore the car to original? What parts are you missing?

Are those cloth seats? If those are cloth seats, I bet your car was originally delivered in Europe, and then brought over to the USA. Do you have the history of ownership since new?

I sure miss my dog... she loved to go.

Very nice deal for ya.

In case you dont know, many of the 245's have check valve right off the gas tank the goes to the return line. If it blows, you will never get the necessary 75psi to start up. A PO who dropped 600/700 under the hood was soo glad when I offered him $100 for it. Check valve was $0.50 at a yard.

245 is Volvo-speak for that awesome looking 240 wagon sitting next to the Merc. Interesting color too, looks almost like the china-blau or whatever it was I had on a 300D once. Fine pair of cars.
