1980 280SE - Mostly done (for now)

Other than little tweaks and driving her, I am done with the major restoration work on my 280SE. I still need want to replace the seats with leather but that might wait until the winter.

Before and After pictures are located at the link below.

Excellent! You must feel very good about your efforts.

I absolutely love W116 chassis cars.

I feel very at home when I see a garage with the W116 sitting next to an MG :-)

Beauty of a car, great work bringing her back!

Also great to see your Griffin radiator and aftermarket fan installed, looks clean and original to me.

Fantastically well done. Was that a repaint in the original color? And what did you do to the air conditioning? Looks like a different compressor on there.

The original color was a (VERY faded) green metallic. We wanted to go with something a little more subtle than a metallic so we chose British Racing Green. It works very well with the interior color.

The original AC hoses were leaking so I replaced pretty much everything. I removed the York compressor and installed a Sanden 709 rotary compressor. The original condenser was in fair shape (a few bent fins) but I replaced it with an aluminum parallel flow condenser. I flushed the evaporator but did not replace it. I removed all the hoses and made up a set of barrier hoses. The electric cooling fan had bad bearings so I replaced it with a 2200 CFM unit. I finally got the low/high switch yesterday (the low cut-out prevents the compressor from turning on; the high switch turns on the cooling fan) and was able to fill it with R-12 last night.

Wow - I love this car. My wife drove it to work Monday and I drove it yesterday and today. I have put about 200 miles on it so far this week. The AC works very well and the ride is very smooth. It has no problem keeping up with early morning tollway traffic (I was around 70mph this morning) and when it turns into a parking lot on the way home it is content to patiently idle, the AC blowing cold air and the temp gauge steady around 190 degrees.
