W115 Differential Compatibility?

I have been digging around the forum and couldn't find any specific threads of differential swaps in W115 cars. Will W116/W123/W126 differentials work in a W115?

W114/W115/W116/W126/R107 will interchange.

Late cars, 86+ have a different mounting system, so may or may not work, unless you do some mods.

V-8s have larger diffs, 1.3L vs. 1.0L capacity.

The 4/5/6 inline engines use the smaller diff.

So differentials from the post 86 years require shimming or other alignment work to get it to fit?

The subrames were redesigned in 86 for the W126 and R107 and the pickup points changed. It's been a while since I looked at two side by side, my recollection is that the rear diff mount changed.

What about W123 differentials? Will they fit in a W115? The mounts look different...

EDIT: Nevermind. Found the answer here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes-forum/18857-differential-ratio-swap-w114.html#post95003

I know someone who installed a complete assembly from a 6.9 into a W123 280E...really slow acceleration compared with the original diff but great fuel mileage...
I just sold a W126 5.0 diff (2.7-1) to a guy who is installing it in a 450 W116 to cut his fuel consumption.

I am almost 100% certain a w123 differential is the same mounting as a w115. I pulled the differential out of the 1985 300D parts car and it had a part number that started with 115 on it.

Yeah --- what THEY said in the link. If you change out the differential, it's best to grab the speedometer\odometer from the donor car ...... IF....you want your gauges to stay accurate.
