How to: Replace w108 Side Mirror glass
Easy job. But I thought I'd do this anyway just in case it comes in handy for someonwe
Mine was deteriorated from behind on the mirror Parts needed 1. New Mirror (Bought mine on Peachparts.com for $20~ bucks) 2. New Trim ring (Bought mine on Peachparts.com for $3 bucks) Tools needed 1. Small screwdriver 2. Cleaning agent and cloth Time 1. Took me 20 minutes As you can see the old mirror and trim ring looked their age The mirror is simply held in place by a metal 'spring' from behind, simply push the mirror at an outer edge and gently insert the screwdriver between the mirror and the trim ring, i just pryed it off breaking the old trim ring. Make sure you keep your fingers on the mirror as you remove the pieces of the trim ring so once it's all out the mirror doesnt drop out onto the ground Remove mirror and take note of how 'spring' is sitting in the mirror housing I cleaned the housing out of the gunk the mirror left behind Make sure when you order the mirror that you match it to the correct year as the shape varies slightly. You can see they are the correct match here. Old and New on top of each other Sit the spring back in the housing and then place your new mirror in the housing and push it back gently....now you have seen the photo's of it out its very simple to reverse this to get it back in.... Then insert the new trim ring and starting at 1 corner tuck it up under the metal lip of the mirror housing. I started in the top left corner and clockwise inserted each corner of the trim ring. you will need to bend/tweak it slightly to get it to pop into the house and secure the mirror give it a final clean to remove finger prints and your good to go |

Remember to install the paper shield between the spring and mirror back to prevent scratching off the silver coating. Also, installing the assembly is easy if you insert the retainer ring from the top as yu are holding in them mirror glass. It is tapered to match the tapered shape of the glass so insert the narrow part from the wide side...slips right in with no hassle.

Mercedes Also sell Convex mirrors for those now. That helps when using the passenger side mirror when driving.

All my W108's and W109's have/had them. You can buy new ones from the Classic center.

Good idea...I'd love to be able to use those to see traffic instead of an arm rest. How much are the convex mirrors?

Ha yep agree..my 71 350SL 3.5 has the singular 'outside mirror adjustable from inside' (per early 1971 brochure). As much as it is more hazardous not having the passenger side..it's quirky to see just the one.
