I'm almost positive that is the 190Dc filter. All the 200D's I've seen have a steel canister, and the size of the filter looks right for the 190Dc. The new filters you have are for the OM616 and OM617 engines used in the 1977 to 1985 240D, 300D, 300CD W123 bodies, 300SD W116 body, and 300SD W126 body to name a few.

Was the fine mesh screen still there between the filter and housing?

easily distracted.......

You mean you didn't know that I could be easily distracted while under an old car for the first time????

I spotted some good rubber and some
not so good rubber. I'm thinking I should
replace the "not so good rubber"
RIGHT away. You think?

I would guess the transmission is original
and
I spotted this engine tag on the front
radiator support.

Transmission ID:
Getr. Typ. GA 190Dc E
Lfd. Nr. 001953
112 271 2301
?? 536 ? 2

Engine Tag (obviously removed from some other car and added here):
OM 621.III
Motor Nr Engine No.
621.912 - 12 - 001826

Can anyone assist in further identifying either?

Hmmmmm...... thanks for the oil filter info. So, where is a source for the Knecht EH 305/1 oil filters or equivalent? Email sent to Roy.

NO, fine mesh screen found. Good Night.

Thanks --- what's the purpose of the fine mesh? Slow down the flow of oil?

Ah ha! Ben's oil filter has a drain plug. Okay, let's see how tight that is. And there is the allen bolt holding the oil filter onto the mounting bracket. So, I got the drain undone, then the allen bolt, then .....how does that thing wiggle thru there? It does, but let me tell, it took me about 5-7 trys to get the angle and position correct.

I took this pic in order
to remind the drain plug
that it will "give up it's oil"
tomorrow night.

I used a UNIOR (US made) 1/2 inch drive 14mm Allen socket. can be on all drain plugs on differential, manual transmission and of course engine. the engine oil drain plug is very hard to unscrew since we seldom change oil, I used a 1/2 inch sliding breaker bar and a 1/2 inch diameter metal water pipe about 2 feet long for more torque . If you use the ratchet drive, it breaks.

1/2 inch drive 14mm Allen socket secured this morning. Included in the package were a 11mm and a 17mm sizes. I asked about the warrenty -- they said lifetime, swap it out. I'm thinking the air 1/2 torque wrench is going to get used tonight.

I also secured ONE oil filter --- the main store actually had three. I'll place an order with Roy or Phil with the various other things I need including extra oil filters.

Yeah, I was pretty sure the rearend differential plugs ---- REMEMBER, unscrew the FILL PLUG.... FIRST ----- were 14mm. I guess it's time to raise the back half of Ben.

You are going about this all correctly. Ben got lucky and found the right new owner. It makes me feel good to see you enjoying this car and preparing it for roadworthy driving.

The previous owner told me someone wanted to buy this car for their teenage daughter who thinks old cars are cool. Imagine where Ben would be in two years if someone did buy this car for their teenager?

Thanks, Jeffrey. After sourcing the oil filter locally this morning and the 14mm Allen socket, I asked if they had a transmission filter. Nope. Then, asked if they had a transmission pan gasket. Nope. Then, I asked if they had an upper radiator hose. Nope.

I quit asking. Making the list for Roy and Phil.

The 200D should be an OM621.VIII, 621.918-1#-######.

The engine tag on Ben I would say is not the original. The serial number 001826 is way too low for the serial number of the car. The rest of the engine numbers look correct.

I'm sure the mesh screen is just another finer filter to catch anything the main filter misses.
