This car is apparently unsellable so I am thinking of taking it on another trip to Utah for Christmas. It is better on fuel than my 300SD and I love the look on people's faces when I tell them I drove it there all the way from Washington, and on how little fuel.

I'd also consider bringing a spare drive belt, glow plug or two and some heavy wire for repairs. Keep a couple filters around just in case, yours are harder to find on the road, especially an oil filter. Remember that if that drive boot goes, it's a very time consuming process to fix and typically can't be done at the side of the road.

I got the boots on mine replaced after 27 years just because and I sleep better because of it.

Hose clamps? heater hose?

Hehe, already made the trip and had no problems. I'm going to be putting in a turbo starter and fast glow conversion kit. Pretty much everything mechanical on this car is new or rebuilt, including radiator and hoses, water pump, injectors, injection pump, fuel tank and hoses, all brakes, all fluids, all suspension lubrication points, steering, etc. I might make another trip next summer. I feel more comfortable driving this car long distances than my 1980 300SD.

Its just that time of year when things are slow.

I imagine come spring and summer when folks are thinking about toys you'll have some nibbles.

The 200D is going to be parted out then sold for scrap. See here: Looking At Buying 1968 200D W110

The axle bearings aren't supposed to be lubed by the gear oil; they're supposed to be packed with grease. I've drilled into the housing and put a grease fitting right on the 45 degree angle in the casting and never had to worry after that. You need a big press to knock the bearings off the axles. The right rear is a barrel roller type and is about 200 bucks. Push and pull on the axles and if they don't move in or out the bearings are probably OK.

You have to pull the whole axel and split the two halves at the hinge to install a non split boot. Use the split one instead. Pay careful attention to how it's installed and you should be OK. One of the replacement clamps in the new kit is a bit too long so you will have to take it apart and move the hole where the tightening screw is mounted. If you don't, the clamp will go tight but it won't be tight around the rubber boot and it will leak!
