My W108 on Ebay!

Hello Peaches,

I listed my car on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280517070133

Please let me know what you think of the listing? Anything I could do to make it better?

Thank you!

Nice car - you seem to be way to honest to be advertising on that site! (So no - no improvements necessary, anyone who needs more information needs to talk to you)

But why that is such a nice car. Would love to have those head lights. What does it cost to do the Power locks the way you have done them on your car? Did you notice you are selling a 108 and have 108 feedbacks??

Beautiful W108

Beautiful car! Why are you selling? Have you found another project?

One of the best Ebay auto posts I have seen in a long time. Beautiful photography and I get a strong sense of your vehicle ownership character. I hope if goes to another owner who will maintain it as well as you have.

Jeffrey,

Looks like a good add. Hope you won't have any regrets unless you have a line on another (fine) 108.

Good Luck,

I love my W108, but I have purchased 3 more cars since the Blue. Goldy Locks and the Emerald Bullet need money for restoration, and I don't have room to store the Blue W108. It is difficult to juggle, drive, maintain and insure 4 Classic Cars. We don't really own these cars, we are stewards making sure they live on. I did my part to make sure the Blue will be around in 50 years.

It is very unlikely that I will find another W108 like the Blue that I can afford. The average retail is $7500 and the high retail is $11,000.00 according to NADA Classic. This car is in above average condition. I chose Ebay as the selling venue because I believe in the market concept. This particular car is not a commodity like wheat or corn, but more like real property with features that are unique. Since there is only one exactly like it, the best way to maximize my price is to give everyone a chance to bid and the party that is willing to pay the most will have a valuable car. Those of us who love these Classic Cars should hope that someone with deep pockets will buy it and have the resources (and garage space) to maintain it for future generations.

The power lock upgrade was not expensive because I did it myself. The alarm kit was originally $199.00 on sale for 49.99. The 6 lock actuators come from Volvo fuel doors which cost about $20 each. One hole had to be drilled to secure each actuator, so the upgrade modification was minimal and completely reversible. Creativity, innovation and time were the greatest factors; removing each door panel and installing the alarm system took about 12 hours.

The auction received the initial bid of $4,999.00. Someone is going to be the proud new owner of this car next Saturday.

I did notice that my feedback was (-W)108... Timing seems to be right to let go of this car.

I've been watching W108's on ebay ever since I bought mine, "The Red Baron", in March.

I've noticed the auctions are hit and miss. It all depends on if you got people bidding it up.

I've seen good ones go for in the $5K range, all the way up to over $10K, and they look about the same in the pics and the description.

If I were in a place right now where I could do this (garage + space) I would bid on this 108, it's one of the more beautiful ones I've seen for sale with a realistic seller and a truly well-represented car! Good luck with the sale and I am sure someone will wind up with one beautiful car.

Thank you very much! You have seen quite a few of these cars so your compliment is greatly appreciated.

I am indeed a realistic seller, but a friend emailed this today:

This was from a Bonham’s auction just concluded. Thought you might enjoy reading this. 1972 280SE 4.5

The car we offer shows just under 75,000 miles from new and its condition is in keeping with this, showing only a couple of minor paint chips and slight flattening of the paint from age. The interior remains clean and intact. Paperwork on file includes the original bill of sale from Mercedes-Benz of Park Avenue New York, listing original options of power steering, power brakes, air-conditioning and sunroof and confirms that it was delivered new in the Arabian Grey paint scheme it still wears and with red interior. It is offered complete with the original wallet including handbook, as well as original jack.

When tested by a Bonhams specialist the car drove well, transmission changing smoothly and the 4.5 liter motor providing reassuring power. The car holds the road solidly and perhaps the only surprise is that you're driving a 38 year car, showing just how advanced these top of the range Mercedes were.”

Results at auction: Sold for $21,060

A Bonham's auction is a very different environment than Ebay. The price that car sold for at Bonham's must have seemed cheap to the bidders compared to the Duesenbergs, Aston Martins, Classic Jaguars, etc.

I want that grille guard for my W110 as it has similar overriders.

Man, this is a problem that I would love to have. Even juggling 12 cars is fine.
