280C Cold Idle & Other Problems

Team -

I now have the 280C sorted out to the point where it is stable, but some advice on a couple of annoying problems would be appreciated.

This is a rebuilt M110 short block and head, with a Solex 4a1 professionally rebuild by the PO

Dwell is good, timing is a bit advanced from specs - 10 deg with no vacuum. Hot idle is 1200-1300 in P and 600 or so in D. Vacuum advance is new and working, and all emissions stuff is hooked up. New 190 thermo installed.

Car starts instantly at all temps.

Tested for vacuum leaks around carb - seemed OK.

Idle mixture has been adjusted.

Problem #1. Car runs very poorly when cold. Will not idle without throttle, misses at low RPM under load. Choke seems to operate OK. No backfire.

Warm running is OK, but with slightly lumpy idle.

Problem #2. Trans has been adjusted, but still has quick shift out of 1st. Right after shift, RPMS fall and there is a hesitation - almost dying - before it gets going in 2nd.

Ideas?

TIA

Chuck

What about vacuum leaks INSIDE the carb??? My Solex 4A1 was "professionally" rebuilt too... but it still came back warped.

But seriously.... one thing I re-learned this weekend is that igntion faults and fuel faults have the same symptoms. What's the condition of your distributor cap, rotor, HT wires, plugs, plug boots, etc.

Good luck, have fun, happy holidays!

All the ignition stuff is good, most new. I am going to change the plugs, though, to eliminate that problem. Not going to give up on the Solex until I find a definite problem with it.

FWIW, I bought a new coil and it made the car run worse... apparently the coil I got was incorrect...

Good luck!
