Stereo spkr location in '70 280SE Conv.?
I am in the process of getting a rebuilt radio from Ed Ebel at Becker. They still service, rebuild and replace the vintage radios. I am getting the 1971 stereo version of the Gran Prix Radio as opposed to the 1970 mono stock version.
Question: Where can I put a second speaker on a convertible? I do not want to cut into the door panels and putting a speaking in the rear deck seems silly on a convertible (not to mention you end up cutting into the rear deck). So that leaves the card-board-like kick panels (which are missing on this car), or going under the dash or under the seats - at least that's all I can think of. Ed also has the 190SL external speakers available and I thought of using that as well though it too is not stock for my model or year of MB. If I went this route - where could I put the speaker. BTW, under the center dash will not work due to the a/c unit. Thanks in advance for any advice. Peter Kaufman

I can sympathize with your dillema. I just went through this exercise on a, recently acquired, 1960 220S. This car never had a radio or speaker opening in the dash. I had a working, Becker Brescia Wonderbar AM tube radio purchased at a yard sale many years ago that turned out to be tha only radio that would fit in this dashboard without cutting. I fitted an old 6 x 9 car speaker and metal grill from a 60s Ford into the cardboard under dash cover, behind the glove box. It looks suitably vintage and sounds OK for AM. But this location may not work in your car because of your AC installation. If the kick panels are missing, I would fabricate new ones from fiberboard, coverd with vinyl to match the interior, and mount speakers there. If there are no large openings and you don't want to cut into the metal behind the kick panels, you'll have to find some slim speakers and experiment with the new panels and accoustic insulation for the best fit and sound.
You might conider the small, self contained, 2 or 3 way 'cube' speakers that require no holes other than for the mounting bracket screws. They are availble at Radio Shack and other electronics stores but try before you buy! You can mount them under the passenger dash or, if there's room, under the seats. I need to have my FM so I installed a mini Blaupunkt FM radio under the center dash with one of these cube speakers fastened to the radio bracket (My 220S has no AC) and it sounds pretty good on FM, But not as strong bass as a good flush mount speaker. Hope this helps. Happy Motoring, Mark DiSilvestro
