74 slc 450 radio replacement

my 74 has an original Becker Grand Prix. Nice and does work reasonably well but I would like to upgrade to a more modern unit. I was able to remove the head only to discover that apparently there is a remote amp(?) and the speaker fade control is on the heat/ac control panel just below the radio. I am assuming access to the speaker wires is via either the amp or via the fader control. Question is, if there is an amp, where is it, and how do I remove that climate control panel?

Second quesiton - somewhere along the line the original electric antenna was removed and replacede with an old fashioned manual pull up mast. The antenna is located on the driver side front fender area. Is access to the mast (and old motor) thru the wheel well ? If so, I assume I will need to do some panel removals ? BTW the original antenna cable is still in the dash but no idea how it was disconnected from the original motor unit. Suggestions for running a new feed if needed would be appreciated.

thanks
ed

R107 SLs only had two speakers.

If you have removed the main box and there is room for the new radio, just leave the amp box in place.

Beckers have a speaker connection that consists of two flat connectors, one rotated 90 degrees, so they look like a "T". disconnect and tap into them at the L-R balance switch, or just run new wires to your speakers, since you should be replacing them as well.

Automatic Hirschman antennas had a screw on cable connection at the unit, so it's likely that the cable end is loose under the fender.

Typically, MB has a mud shield behind the front wheel and removal of that will gain access to the underside of the fender.

thanks Jim, I'll check out that mud flap in the tire well. The car is an SLC so I have rear speakers as well. There is no speaker connect at the head unit at all. They are either at the fader control or the amp.

Go to a car wash and clean out the wheel well area behind your right front tire. The access panel to the antenna is there and the screws can be hard to see due to road grime.

Remove the panel and you will have access to the antenna. Taking off the front tire here will also help a lot while working on the antenna.
