1963 190D

My next door neighbor grandmother pass in santa barbara and left a 190D in the garage, for the pass 12 year never been driven when she got sick as part of her estate. she is giving the car to me cause she have no use for it.
the car looks good paint in in excellent condition no rust. engine is looks clean of rust just lot of dust, she even have all service record interior in prefect condition. this car is a inline 6 diesel.
the the only problem with this car is that it is very under power only 55hp and takes 30sec for 0-60 and do not climb hills very well.
can some body please tell me if I can replace the 190D engine with a 1981 diesel benz engine? like a 300d or sd
thanks for the help

I have a 1968 200D with only 55 horsepower and it is plenty enough for normal driving unless the traffic on the freeway moves over 75 MPH (that's about as fast as they can comfortably drive). The 30 second 0-60 time feels much shorter than it is. Merging onto the freeway shouldn't be a problem.

When my car is loaded up with 4 people and tools it does slow down the acceleration a bit, especially if the A/C is on. These cars aren't as slow as people make them out to be. There are many slower cars out there.

If you want more horsepower, a 1970s or 1980s 240D engine will fit in there okay with minimal modification. You might even be able to get a newer 4 cylinder diesel engine in there than that with some work.

You could also install a 5 cylinder turbo engine from a 300D or 300SD (I have done so in another car), but it would take much creativity and effort on your part, or lots of money to pay an expert Mercedes mechanic to do (not cost-effective).

Since your car has the shorter of the two fintail front ends (I am assuming it's not a ponton), getting the longer 5 cylinder engine to fit will be more difficult because the radiator will have to be made to fit inside the body shroud and you'll have to have a remote coolant overflow tank, like they did when they shoehorned the 6 cylinder gasoline engines into the 230 model.

It's a difficult conversion because the oil tower needs to be relocated, engine mounts and linkage need to be fabricated, etc. It calls for REAL creativity, plus you have to find a flywheel that fits, but at least the original transmission will bolt up to the later 5 cylinder turbo engines...

Hopefully this will give you an idea. Though these cars only have 55 horsepower they have a lot of torque and its not much different than driving an older 4 cylinder gasoline Honda or Toyota. There's enough to get around fine and keep up with traffic, you just can't race one or burn the tires. They are good for normal driving situations.

It sounds like you have a very interesting car.

Driving a diesel car of that vintage takes some getting used to. Have you changed the fuel filter and air filter on the car?

I would love to see pictures as well as having learned the car's history.

Just drive it as is. My 71 Diesel is the same way. Slow and little power. I drive it just fine everyday!

If you do swap in a 240 D engine make sure you get all the electrical stuff, like the glow plug relay, that goes with it.

It could be that just a simple 'tune-up' by a Mercedes mechanic would add more power. Things like cleaning the fuel system and the injectors can make a difference. I would doubt that you need new injectors, but someone that knows what they are doing could pull one and tell you. A proper spray pattern from the injectors can make a big difference and the tips might have rusted a bit from sitting that long.

It is also possible that you have a micro-organism problem since they like to feed on old Diesel fuel. Pour in some diesel fuel additive, which is available at any auto parts store, and just drive the car around for a few hundred miles. Just a little bit of power is apparent on one of these cars.

These things are a lot cheaper and easier than swapping an engine.

Please let us know if any of this helped.

I am not sure if this car has one fuel filter or two. Make sure you change them both if there are two of them.
