Replacing Power Steering Pump belt in 1971 280SE (Straight six)
I am in the process of trying to replace the power steering pump belt.
I have a 1971 280SE (straight six) and notice three bolts (2 in the front, 1 in the back) on the power steering pump which I loosened, however, I cannot move the pump enough to allow me slip the belt off. Should this be the case? One more observation. There is a bolt that I noticed towards the back (firewall side of the pump) with a nut on it. I loosened the nut but then the bolt started to turn freely. This is the fourth bolt I noticed that went into the pump. Again, its on the back side on the top. What is this for? Thanks. |

There is an adjusting screw that can be turned to slacken the belt. The pump mount is a little hard to figure out though. You may have to spray some cleaner on the assembly.

I just did this on my '67 as I had to replace the alternator/water pump belt and pretty sure it's the same set-up on the later 108s- it's a bit of a pain in the arse but slacken the bolt on the rear (14mm), and the 2 on the front (17mm)- they just need slight slackening- then use the 10mm tensioner bolt/nut sticking out the side of the pump towards the fender to gain the slack. You should then be able to gain enough slack to lever the pump and get the belt off. You may want to turn the pump pulley to help get the belt off and the new one on. The manual states to use the 10mm tensioner to set the belt tension then tighten the bigger bolts once that's done.

ok. Thanks wbain5280 and chazola. I finally noticed that tensioner bolt/nut sticking out the side of the pump as well as all the gunk. I will loosen it and try to move the pump .
Any idea what that other bolt is? Its on the back of the pump, on the top. The bolt goes into the pump and there is a nut attached. |
