Question Refinshing Wood, Cracks?

Question:
I am refinishing a set wood out of a 111 coup, the wood has never been refinished before. The wood was a mess, I have it down to bare wood.

I still have these stains? from where the lacquer cracked so the wood looks like it has a whole lot of cracks throughout.

How can I get rid of these cracks? Wood Bleach?

Mike

I'm not sure what to do, but I know that the veneer is very thin and that you should not try to sand them out. You might try a stain close to the color of the wood.

There are a bunch of places in Hemmings who restore wood, and they will generally talk to you ...

Mike: there are about three guys in the US who know how to do this right. Check the MB veterans list archive which you can join and review at www.mbz.org. I have read through the archive about the wood thing before I decided to send it out (I am still removing the wood from my dash for this) to Drew at Heritage Woodworks in North Carolina. He's highly recommended on several lists.

Good luck and be careful with the thin veneer.

hi
oxalic acid comes in crystals you mix up it will bleach black stains out of wood. it's used to take black water/ferterlizer stains from wood furniture. it will raise the grain so i'm not sure i'd actually recommend it for thin wood veneer. but on the other hand if it's moisture that caused this stain it may be deep enough to be thru the wood veneer thickness so you may be up the creek no matter what you try. best let a pro do it. try tim moyer at classic wood design in ontario, calif. 800-331-5192 he makes wood dashes and i know he can refinish and fix almost anything in wood.
