65 220 Colum shift linkage help!!!

Hi there,
New to the forum and looking for some parts help with my late grandfather's 1965 220SE (i think) four door sedan with a straight 6 and column shift automatic. Tried to shift it the other day and found that the linkage wasn't moving. After some investigating, i found that the linkage assembly at the base of the steering colum, just on the engine side of the firewall, had a broken ball stud in it. This is a funky little setup of a linkage......I can't seem to find ANY parts that come close to resembling it in any of the Peach Parts catalogs. There is the arm that is connected to the down-rod coming from the colum mounted shift lever and pressed onto the end of this arm is a small metal ball stud, that's what broke.....with the ball end stuck in the socket end of this small "double ball socket" linkage piece. So, I need to find some sort of replacement ball that I can either press in to that lever (IF I can remove it from the shifting shaft) AND that small double ball socket linkage shaft, becuase there's no way that broken ball section will come out of there.
Has anyone seen this setup before or know of any "easy" fixes????
Please let me know anything you can, it will be greatly apreciated.
Thanks, Rob

Rob,

You might want to join a group with older folks or look at the classic section here.. For parts, your best source is going to be Mercedes for a bunch of stuff. Most places can get some, but something like that stud... MB. Many dealerships sell at wholesale. There is a "classic center" in California which will be able to help you with many parts as needed.

Been through this problem,
without the broken metal part though.
220 SEb manual column shift.

Most important is to replace ALL nylon bushings in the entire shift system, even the big ones on the trans itself. This system is designed for very smooth perfect easy functioning. (After all it is Mercedes engineering).
Nylon has a life span which is now exceeded.
Also ALL motor mounts 2, and transmission mount 1, Subframe mounts 2 must be replaced to properly locate the engine/trans to the body. Check the subframe centering strut.

only then will it shift smooth and accurate.
I have never "adjusted " the rods, just corrected the bushings and mountings.

Ahmmn.... Like how old? Tales from the crypt old? People who built our vintage cars are probably taking a long dirt nap. Some of us here on the forum specialize in restoring 1950s, 1960s and 1970s vintage Mercedes. I don't know of a better place to find information and discussions of vintage Mercedes Benz.

Welcome to the Forum! Rob, you are in the right place!!

Rob,

The MB dealer would be my last resort... Unless you have bags of cash and you are wheelchair bound and destest fixing things yourself. If you want to fix it yourself and just need information, we can help.

echo

Rob.

I'm going to echo Jeffrey's comments. When I bought my first one, I told my wife that we don't make enough money for me to be taking it to the dealer for every little thing that needs to be fixed. She let me spend $300 on a big rolling toolbox full of tools at a garage sale --- it might be my biggest bargain in my Mercedes hobby.

Anyway. Here's how we can help:
  1. Identification of the exact part(s) you need. If you don't have an Apple Mac, then I would suggest you download and install EPCnet. It is a very valuable resource.
  2. Creating of a WTB: '65 220 column shift linkage thread in the Parts Forum --- I think most of the Vintage guys are already seeing your thread in this forum.
  3. Procurement of parts.
  4. Installation.
I don't have any spare parts for your car or I would have already offered what you need.

Good Luck
