Granadas (and the Mercury clone, the Monarch) came out in 1975, and my recollection was the comparisons to the W115 MBs at the time.

Good effort by Ford, but you just cannot polish a turd....

The final variation of the Falcon/Maverick chassis. I remember Ford's amusing advertising comparisons with Mercedes. To me, the rectangular headlight units on that '79 Granada are especially ugly. IMHO, the early Granada's round headlights were better looking.

Not too many Granadas still on the road, and I can't imagine there's a Granada Classic Center.

we use to rob the disk brakes for old Mustangs. LOL Comparing a Granada to a Benz is a hell of a stretch.

Was for a long time, looking for granada or Fairmont w/ a 200 I-6 with a C3 transmission to rob the bell housing. they are hard to find in bone yards too.
I have pretty much scrapped the c3 bell on a A4DL transmission and I am going with a C4 for the ranchero project. A4LD is kinda weak anyhoo.

Haha, I knew it! Those copycats. After the W116 chassis came out it looks like every other car manufacturer (Toyota, Ford, etc.) copied the design.

I remember the ad campaign-

The funny one was where they compared the 45 degree miter on the chrome trim around the windows to the Mercedes--like that made a better car. Guess what, the Ford's window trim still looked crummy. So did the rest of the car. That's why there's a WHOLE lot more 1970's Mercedes around than Granadas or Monarchs!

Emulation is the most sincere form of flattery.

A buddy of mine had 3 of them, 1 Granada and 2 Monarchs. I have no idea why he liked them so much. He was always tinkering with them to get them to run right, they never lasted more than 100k or so miles, but he loved those turds. His last one was his favorite, he did it up with a 302 with headers and sidepipes, Cragar SS rims, cheesy wing on the back, cheesy scoop on the front, Tazmanian Devil mudflaps, typical white trash trailer park hot rod, and he thought he was total hot **** in it! It was an utter laughingstock. Yes, you can polish a turd (they did it on Mythbusters!) but these cars are more like diarrhea than a solid, polishable turd. Unpolishable soft poo.

The US version of the Ford Granada did not look anything like the W116. The European Ford Granada MKII did however did

These cars ran from 1978 to 1985 with the flagship model having a 2.8 liter fuel injected v6 that was built in Cologne Germany. I have a huge soft spot for these cars for pretty much the same reason that I have a soft spot for the W116. They're big, RWD and look like a million dollars.

I saw one of those European Granadas sitting in a Northern Virginia parking lot, maybe 20 years ago. Wondered how it managed to slip through the DOT/EPA barricades. Of course, those Granadas had to compete with other European cars.
Though the US Granada didn't exactly look like a Mercedes, when compared with such pinnacles of mid-70s American grotesqueness as the Ford Gran-Torino Elite and Chevy Monte-Carlo, it was quite tastefull and restrained.

Ford called it their "Precision Size" car. They were, precisely, junk.
