I saw this picture on my 914 board, looks like a 500SL rally car at the Race of Champions (ROC) this year:

Need badging...

"Improvement thru change"

"Make it your own"

roughly translated to fit the crest, I can add some sort of "gruppe B reference.. Or should something like this revolve around iron crosses...

It's a very nice conversion which will give more power than you need . You can even bolt on large series 2 W126 brakes (use the 15 or 16" wheels too) to get real performance braking.
I am still looking for the right deal on a 560 to swap into my 114. What difficulties would I have swapping in a 560 from a W126? It is easier to find reasonably priced W126 parts cars than it is R107's. I presume I would need the oil pan and motor mounts from a R107 . How about the tranny and rear end? I doubt the differential and axle would swap but can I use the W126 flex plate with the w114 drive shaft? Will the gearing be way off? How about the tranny swap? And what about keeping the V8 cool? Will the stock W114 radiator cut it? Any idea what the weight difference is between the 6 and the V8? would I need custom springs up front?

You need an oil pan from a 560SL.

Just the oil pan? Not the motor mounts?

I am sure the mount location (alloy arm to rubber mount) are the same on the 114 ,107 and 116 123 and 126. So it's a simply a matter of bolting in the engine. plenty of wreckers have oil pans, you just need a V8 W107 part and it need not be a 560 specific pan.
Yes,buy a complete RUNNING 560 and use it as a donor because you want to extract the entire loom and use the engine and aircon (and cruise if you want it) to run your engine.560's have either mecanical or drive by wire. it's all very basic once you get into but never make the mistake of chopping into a loom to get it out of the car. it has to be marked first, then carefully unplugged and removed.
The trans has it's own loom so do not forget that is also part of the engine loom.
it's a very rewarding swap and well worth the effort to do it.

I'm pretty sure that you need an oil pan from a later M117 engine (not a 3.5 or 4.5) as the back of the engine is different. If I'm wrong then I'll happily sell you an oil pan that was removed from a 77 450SL as I have one spare.

You'll also need the oil filter housing.

I think you are correct the later aluminum engines have a different bolt pattern for the oil pan. The SEL oil filters face up vs down on the W114 and R107's. If I swap in a later 560 SEL engine and tranny together I will also probably run into issues with the speedo, I think the newer transmissions are electronic vs. the cable I currently have. Exhaust manifolds are likely different on the SEL as well as radiator hoses and perhaps the air cleaner and of course wiring differences.

Nothing money and time can't resolve. All about finding the right donor car.

I believe this is the original topic of this thread, which I'm very interest in, however it seems this thread has taken a sharp left turn and lost it's original topic.....
...with that said...
Jeffery, I have a logo whipped up for you to check out. I also own an increasingly non-stock mercedes W116 and am from a resto-mod type background so I'm all over this.....Send me a PM.

I like your logo Panzer. If you could make it into a stencil I could maybe spray some enamel grill badges with that emblem. Yeah?

I am sure they all interchange including the pans from the iron block motors. I will find out in the new year when i install a 500 into a W112 .It will need a aircompressor for the suspension so it will be getting a M116 sump with compressor mount from a 3.5 . The rear bellhousing attachments are different though. The strengthening ribs being of a different design.
As for oil filters, the filter housing simply unbolts and if you want one that loads from underneath or from the top, simply bolt the type you want on. Beware though, the oil cooler equipped cars have a thermostat in them. If you block off the cooler ports, you will also have no oil pressure.
