NEW CAMSHAFT FOR 1968 280S
This fall I will be putting my 1968 280s (m130.920) engine that I have totally overhaul back togather again. I need to buy a new camshaft. My instructor said that I should buy an after market brand that will give me better fuel economy, performance, and torque.
Doesanybody knows where where to buy or who custom make camshaft? thanks dpl |

Yes, schneidercams.com/ is were I had my 280SE cam done recently.
You do not wish to buy a cam but have yours "re-ground" to a different profile (or just original) which they will consult with you on. Call them |

If a camshaft is worn how can you regrind it to original profile? Lost metal is lost metal is it not?

It's not lost, the cam is reprofiled ,all that happens is the base circle is smaller and because the tappets are adjustable you simply adjust them to specs.

Daimler spent 3 decades selling cars with the basic M180,M130 engines and they fitted cams which develop power from idle to 6000 RPM which suits 99.9% of drivers. You could either install a good used cam and rocker arms (never mix and match arms and cam lobes) or order a new cam from the mercedes Classic center. |

They add metal to it first, then regrind it, then treat it!

I believe it best a new camshaft is installed with new camshaft bearing as a matched set . A new cam will also requires new tappets /cam followers .
A worn out or mismatched top end makes a tappety sound difficult to eliminate. mak |

Thanks Brian, I will do more research on monday. I will check with benz classic center, philp with peachparts, schneidercams, and 4 other camshafts machinenist that that I found on the web. I am looking for the next step up Camshaft with slightly "enhanced" profiles (mileage/economy,towing, and mild performance cams). my idle quality, driveability and emissions remain about the same as stock but my engine puts out more power and gets somewhat better fuel economy.
Peter and mercmad6.3, If you guys do not know much about camshaft grinding why don't you research the question before answering? Have you guys ever heard about college courses such as Automotive Technician -(Engine rebuilding and automotive machining and engine repair)? I guest not. I advice that you read this "Choosing A Camshaft" by AA1car also look up auto Engineer educator and text book writer Gary Lewis. You can regrind cams, crank, intake and exhaust valves, you can horne the engine block and you can also grind a cylinder head. All these can be done if you follow the factory specification and you must have the correct tool and machine to do these specific task. People who do this are call machinenist. What do you know about automotive engineering to tell me to dump my instructor? Did you graduated from MIT? Work as an engineer for formular 1 racing for 10 yrs. helping to develop new products? Have you the experience working with NASA automotive development dept. for 14yrs. and help to develope the Benz technology head light? Yes, mercedes benz have a excellent record for making top quality, precise engineering cars up till after 1982. Even up till now they have too much mechanical problems. Do not put American cars company down. we made very good cars back in the days. got yah!! (just joking) thanks guys |

From before this period and up to today I have been involved in all facets of automotive engineering and some areas of motor sport including racing a C/S roadster on the Salt flats with a 354 HEMI,with a trans I built myself and electronic injection producing 1000 HP on pump fuel . I ran 123MPH in First gear. I helped build a suzuki 3 cylinder car which holds the world FIA land speed record at 129MPH. 500CC. I count amongst my friends staff at Daimler AG Stuttgart who built the F1 Champ lewis Hamilton's Championship winning engines . Their other engines were raced by M Shumacher etc. in the SPA race last week end. my Own 6.3 has computor controlled ignition and I am in the process of designing a better three dimensional cam for the MFI amongst other mods I got my First Mercedes in 1974 ,a 3 year old 280SE, I have owned several hundred cars from my first which I rebuilt at 12 years old. Here some projects I am doing at present. http://picasaweb.google.com.au/mercmad6.3/1956MercedesBenz220aRestoration http://picasaweb.google.com.au/mercmad6.3/MercedesW111220SECoupe http://picasaweb.google.com.au/mercmad6.3/W111ConvertibleRebuild So when I see some one who thinks they know better than the engineers at Daimler (there are 10,000 involved in research and development in the Daimler organization) I see someone who has built a few SBC's and thinks that all engines are built to that low standard and that just swapping in a cam is the be all and end all of automotive engineering. Just consider a fact. The size of the average mercedes engine is only 1/3-2/3rds the size of comparable engines in other cars of the same age and size, yet they outperform the larger engined cars. If your informant thinks that a cam grinder like schnieder ,who I remember as being a cam grinder in the 60's and haven't done anything of note since, can improve on the mercedes Design then he is seriously mistaken. |

Good, so many choices
I just went there (local guys) and said gimmie a stock profile, they said they had 30+ MBZ profiles. Car is M130 280SE runs very well. Price right, cam looks fine, well ground, parkerized, lubed and functions fine. |
