How to remove all that chrome on fintail?

My son and are stripping the 67 fintail we bought. I'm concerned about removing all those nice external chrome pieces from the fenders, vent area,.etc. How do these items come off. I believe the trunk emblem is held in place by some adhesive and a couple of nuts.
What the strips on the fins? How about the rear vent chrome, nearest rear window? Any other tricks I need to know?
thanks,
Jack

The chrome trim on the fins will pop right off. There is a channel under the strip that has some spring loaded clips. Use some plastic so the paint won't be damaged.

The trunk star is held on with a bolt. The air vent has some small screws.

A plastic prybar set (from Harbor Frieght, etc.) will be your friend. Chances are the metal clips will be rusted and the plastic part of the clips will break but they should be available new inexpensively.

I found some "clone" vinyl (no, really, vinyl) wedges like those shown in MB manuals and they work very, very well, and are "resharpenable". Much better than the "plastic pry bars", because you can used the wedge to slowly lift the parts. This is particularly useful on windshield moulding.

Jack, there is a small 'stud' with a nut on the rear that attaches the chrome to the car. It can be undone from the trunk. The chrome will then slid backwards and you can detach it from the car (after unsnapping it from the clips). The clip near the rear door is made so the chrome can slip over it. The rest of the clips are made so the chrome will pop over them. I just ordered all new hardware for my 230S - the clips, plastic pads that go under them, the stud, nut, washer, etc. were available from MB - EXCEPT the one that goes by the rear doors. It is NLA. If yours are in good shape, either leave them on the car or put them in a safe place. Good luck.

Tom

Well I guess it's your lucky day, as I'm sitting 15 feet from my Fintail that has the chrome not on the right rear fender... There's a row of clips like the one with the 4 points to it and then the final one right at the tip of the fin looks to be something that the trim slides over. See attached.

Again your lucky day. The clip is part number (A)001 988 1878 and there are 12 on the car (6 left, 6 right). They are riveted in, MB provides a part number for the rivet, 000 990 3097 but I think a pop rivet will work. Pick attached of the replacement clip - note that it is brass colored instead of aluminum colored. Looking at EPC , there is another clip listed for "garnish mouldings to rear fenders" - that part is 001 988 3778. I don't know what that part is but the quantity is 2. So it may be a part for the rear clip on each side but I don't think so. The very rear attachment point shown in the pics above are NOT riveted in. They unscrew and are held in by a nut with captive washer. You can reach it with your hands. So unless yours are really rusty you don't need that part. I _think_ that part is 00 990 2333 and the nut is 000 990 7051.

My interpretation is that you slide the molding over the last clip that is the rectangular one in the photos while it is loosened, then you tighten it down, and then snap the molding on to the 6 other clips. But you could try sliding it.

The clips I bought I just ordered from an on-line dealer (or maybe from the classic center). I don't remember which.
