'72 220D - replaced leaky primer pump, now new one leaks!

I just purchased a '72 220D that's leaking a lot of fuel. At first I thought it was just the primer pump, so I replaced that and then noticed that there is also fuel leaking around the injectors. I'm going to replace the hoses later today and see if that fixes the injector leaks, but my problem is the new primer pump (which is the old style, http://www.dragtimes.com/parts/DIESEL-PRIMER-PUMP-MERCEDES-220D-240D-300D-0000908850_330428113326.html, not the new Bosch type) is leaking in exactly the same way the old one did! When I pump it, fuel squooshes up from around the white plastic pump piece. I didn't notice a copper washer on the one I installed like you can see in the link above - could that somehow be causing the leak even though it's leaking from the pump part and not the bottom?

You received a bad "new" part. Replace with the updated unit and that should correct the issue.

When replacing the fuel injector return lines use the proper Mercedes braided viton fuel hose, just about every other type of hose will leak within short order.

Welcome to the forums, post some pictures of your 220D, we'd love to see it.

Also, do not use "channel lock" pliers or their ilk to tighten the prime pump. They will distort the cylinder and prevent it from sealing properly.

Thanks for the tip, Mike D!

79Mercy, I ordered the old type on purpose because I want to eventually use biodiesel and the old pump style is supposed to be better suited to that type of fuel. But perhaps I did get a bad one, I'll contact the supplier about sending a new one. Thanks for the suggestion!

Just a thought, but I thought my new primer pump was leaking on my 123 just like the old one too. Turned out it was the outlet nipple was leaking and just dripping off the same spot. Make sure the inlet and outlet are tight and not leaking. This is assuming the primer pump is similar to the one on my 123.

It's definitely coming from the pump itself. I'm waiting for a replacement to arrive - in the meantime, is it bad for me to use the car if I can't pump the primer? It does definitely start hard right now and I don't want to wear out the starter and whatever else. Will the pressure build back up with use, or will it keep starting hard until I get a working pump on it?
