Becker Stereo Idea

Saw this subject in the Getting Parts post ...

I also put a Becker Europa II stereo in my '73 280C. The PO had added rear speakers so I hooked those up. I do not want speakers in the kick panels, but I do want some sound from the dash speaker.

The trouble is that if you bridge the stereo outputs to a single speaker, then the entire system goes mono.

I came up with the idea of trying to fit two 3.5" speakers in the front speaker opening. Ed Ebel of Becker, who is an awesome resource, suggested a replacement speaker for the dash, running one channel to the front and one to the rear to give "front - back stereo."

Any suggestions?

Other factoid #1 - I have a 250C owners manual, and it shows a control for "Stereo Module Control" so apparently stereo was an option in the early cars, and the control is probably for rear speakers.

Other factoid #2 - The Europa II came out of my '79 280E and it drove the four stock speakers very nicely. You cannot hook an amp to it, but it has plenty of punch to drive reasonably efficient speakers.

My $.03.

How about two 5 x 7 coax speakers under the dash, not in the kick panels but in the
fiberboard covers (assuming you still have yours) under the glovebox and above the brake pedal. That's how I installed better stereo speakers in my 250 sedan and in my previous 1972 - 115/220. Out of sight but sound OK.
My 250C has the original front / rear stereo
speakers - one in the dash and one in the rear shelf. This is probably the simplest arrangement and sounds better than the original 4 speaker setup did in my sedan.
I have heard of taking the left+ and right+ wires and hooking them up on either side of a speaker for the 'center' channel.
Supposedly this still allows stereo from the other 2 speakers but I've never tried this out.
Happy Motoring,
Mark

That's what I thought but according to Ed, this makes the whole system monaural.

Well, In theory, if you bridged the 2 positive speaker leads across a third speaker, instead of directly to each other, that speakers resistance would still allow a degree of stereo to the other 2 speakers. But I've never tried it and I would be concerned about possible damage to the radio.

I don't think there's clearance behind the kick panels for decent speakers anyway.
Is mounting a pair in the under dash cover panels not an option? What about one in the dash and one underneath? If you don't want to cut holes, How about a pair of those small cube speakers like they sell at Radio Shack?

Hope this helps,
Happy Motoring,
Mark

I think the best idea I've read on this thread is your own...when you suggested using two smaller speakers in the factory opening, in place of the one. Get the highest quality, highest wattage 2 1/4", 3", whatever, that you can get your hands on, and a piece of thin flexible plastic, or fiberboard, or similar easily workable material, and make a plate to fit the factory opening, with two holes for the new speakers. If you want to get real creative, you can find a way to angle them slightly left and right, to maximize the stereo field.

Kick pods

I dont know how you guys feel about this but in my 72 280sel
I built kick pods to solve the problem. As far as keeping it stock,
I havent cut anything I just removed both kick panels and made
fiberglass enclosures. They can be removed and put back to stock
very easily. Not only does it solve the problem but the benefits
never end. The sound they produce is farrrrrrrrr superior to any
stock location. you wont really need rear speakers as they are just used for something called rear fill. The front stage of your
stereo system (front speakers) are by far the most important.
focusing on the rear would be like going to a concert and standing backwards. Everyone says that working with fiberglass is a pain. This is true to some extent but there are lots of tricks to
save lots of time and mess. if anyone is interested I am currently
in the process of installing $ 10,000 worth of stereo equipment in my 280 sel including tv's in the sun visors. I would be happy to help anyone who has questions. My pods house 6.5'' mids and
1'' tweeters but you could build a smaller pod for lets say some
4'' coaxials or 4'' mids and tweets you can put anywhere.
