thanks all for the input. ive decided to block down and buff the original paint, after sanding with 800 grit and super duty compounding. the factory paint is shining perfectly. this is with NO polish. so ive since decided to just do some local repairs on the rust spots, and have it professionally blended. i figure no paint is better than factory, and even the factory paint with a few scratches here and there(with touch up) is way better than any job the local maaco could do for my budget. ill be sure too keep all informed with photos of my progress.

I know you have already posted your intentions but I just now happened to come across this thread so I'm a little "late to the party"!
I was only going to suggest if you were going to do it yourself, try just doing a panel at a time. That way you're not committing to shooting the entire car and it gives you time to 're-group' IF something happened to be going wrong... Oh well, good luck to you whatever you end up doing (or have ALREADY done!) PS: pictures???

update
i started priming, i need to go get a better water seperator for my compressor.
i decided to buy good paint and do it myself. keeping the hood, roof and trunk original. ill show some pics of how i got to where i am now. there pleanty more. but the rust "bubbles" ground down to almost nothing, so i welded in new metal and filled it smooth, i just finished priming it a few minutes ago. but im off to home depot to go buy a new water seperator. i dont paint much, and i borrowed a compressor from a friend. its a high cfm, with only 6 gallon tank. will a home depot seperator work well?

Fantastic looking job so far. Good luck with the rest of it, would love to see the completed project. In relation to Alabassi's question about BC/CC, yes seriously. No manufacturers CC, without exception has ever stood up to AZ sun for more than a decade. Some are worse than others but unless the vehicle has been a garage queen for much of it's life in Phoenix the CC will burst. Japannese, German, American, other - makes no difference. One reason why I hope never to buy a metallic colored car in future.

If there's any more welding needed in other parts of the car, would you mind posting a picture of the finished welding before the filler is used? I'm looking at doing similar work to my 116 (not nearly as bad as yours) and I'm curious to see how thick the filler will end up being after metal is welded in.
On a different note, the car looks great! So the hood, roof, and trunk will not be repainted? Are you concerned with blending the paints at all? I can't wait to see pictures after it's finished. Regards, David

ill look through my pics to see if i have them of the welds. Remember that when using filler, u want it as THIN as possible. however it is MUCH easier to fix a low spot in metal than fix a high spot. my filler is no thicker than 1/8 anywhere, and make sure u get a good sealer for behind the panels, after the weld. or else it will just rust again. then undercoat it.
i took the whole trunk lid to a paint place for me, and had them match the paint. im not too concerned for "blending" as they aged the paint to match "perfectly". i doubt itll match perfect but since theres gaps between the wings and trunk lid, hood, and roof. it will not be very noticable. if it were silver or a metallic color id be much more worried about matching/blending. paint went on great today, tomorrow i plan to roll it out of the garage to make sure it matches, then unmask it. proceed to block and buff it.
