74 slc 450 Seat Belt Retractor

My seat belt retractor on the drivers side just starting hanging up this morning. will pull out part way and catch. tried multiple times to relax the pull and let it retract a little, then pull again to extend it. Never got all the way so I could use it. It seems to retract just fine but hangs part way everytime I pul on it. Does anyone have a diagram of the rear passenger side panel and/or instructions on gaining access to retractor.
thanks

the mechanism sits low by the floor and has a little weight that shifts forward and back that locks the mechanism. The retractor and this little weight system gets gunked up with lint and dirt, sometimes the belt slips to one side as well. you have to pull panel to gain access. If no one posts the intructions, I have them in my shop , just got to get there to retrieve them. Let me know

thanks for the info Ron. If you do happen to find yourself headed to the shop I would greatly appreciate that set of instructions.

Don't know if the 74 has the newer style retractor, but my 72 has fixed shoulder straps that hook into the lap belt. The lap belt retractor id down low beside the seat. The mechanism is enclosed in a plastic moulding but the plastic is now very still and I couldn't see a way of getting it off easily to get at the mechanism.

So, what I did, is spray in some lubricant - It was a Teflon based product, but something like WD-40. Amazingly, after first rotating the retractor by hand (you can do this from underside of it), pulling belt all way out , spraying and repeating that a few times, it continued to work all summer.

Later cars have the retractor hidden under the rear panels. Those would have to be removed, but then you could probably do something similar.

Good Luck!

if you PM me your email , I can scan the page and send to you next week, I looked and the SLC removal is a little more compliated than the SL, also looks like the retractor is up high , is that correct, with lower belt connection just bolted to floor?

Correct - it "sounds" like the retractor mechanism is about mid-way down the side panel and as near as I can tell, removal of the whole back seat, bench and back, may be required

sending my email in a PM.

thanks
