Ron, the set of RHD tri-Ys must be out of a W126 because they never existed in r107 form.
r107 tri-Ys were fitted to M117.960 and M117.961 engines. They unfortunately never came with the 10:1CR like the W126 equipped ith tri-Ys. |

engine performance without catalytic converter
Gael
I was curious about your engine setup without the catalytic converter. What do you anticipate the increased performance to be ? - additional horsepower (5% +-) - additional torque - any increase in mpg ? And what allowance do you have to make at the engine computer? Thanks |

Joe,
The engine I'm using didn't have any catalytic converter from stock, as it came out of a grey market 450SLC 5.0. It has 240hp anf 41kg of torque in stock form, including the tri-Ys. I expect to gain 15 to 20 additional hp with the AMG camshafts and then 10 to 15% power gain through the Fuel & Spark Megasquirt management system. So I hope to get between 280 and 300 hp. That's the theory. In practice that engine has 150.000 miles on its US odometer, and who knows how much it had on it before being imported to the US. I didn't open the engine to rebuild it because it was working well before I took it out of the car, no smoke of any sort, reasonable and balanced compressions and some evidence of recent work with heads off. So I just changed the crankshaft seals front and back as well as oil pan gasket, replaced timing chain and all guides, and replaced all intake seals and donuts when I adapted the 4.5 Djet intake manifold for the Megasquirt. I'm going to try it like that for now. If I source another engine I may develop it a bit with 10.1 CR, P&P'd 560 heads, custom intake manifold (ala 6.3, more for the look of it in the W111 Chassis than for power gain really) and may be a 5.6 crankshaft also. But that will be for later. For now I don't want the engine to develop crazy power and torque as I don't know how my home made 5 speed manual trans is going to hold. The other way to gain performance is to save weignt. My car is as light as it can be in stock form, with power nothing and very light wheels. I think I am also going to relocate the battery in the trunck with a lighter Braille one for better weight distributuon. I may also look into aluminum brake callipers that I can adpapt if I find some for a reasonable price. At a later stage I may also consider fiber engine and trunk lids as well as bumpers, if I find a way to have them done cheap. But all in all I want the car to retain it's stock look. After all that I will be left with a serious diet as there is quite some weight to be saved there also! What do you meanby "what allowance do you have to make at the engine computer"? |

And I am still at it...
Todays project has been installing a new engine in a W107 SL. all stock ,no mods and even has hub caps. On the subject of SL Vs SEL oil pans, the W107 pan has a smaller sump section to clear the crossmember ,otherwise it's the same shape and size as any W116 or W126 part. marcus finny test drive 24 june 2012 - YouTube |
