Try heading north...

I know you're a bit far away, but there are a couple of nice 108s listed on CL here in the SF Bay area right now. If the car isn't from the coast, it will probably not have any rust. My '72 came from Modesto; underneath, it looks like it just rolled off the assembly line.

It might be worth the $59 Virgin airfare to check them out. Here's a sampling:

The guy in the first ad has quite a few cars (he's selling his collection, including a 600 limo, a couple of 6.3s, a bunch of 108s and 107s).

Most interesting 108 I saw recently: a conversion to an OM617.95 turbodiesel.

Good luck!

No rust = a lot of rust in engine compartment, very corroded looking heads. cancer in body.

Nice paint = one fender total bondo, not painted with rust coming through that doesn't line up with door.

Lots of extra parts = a couple of small bags of stuff in trunk which he could not identify. But I did find under a lot of other junk in the trunk nice condition wood trim pieces.

The interior was ok, here are some pics, I knew for $1500 it wouldn't be pretty but he had my hopes up. Think I will pass but if anyone here is interested PM me and I will pass along sellers phone. I bet he would take $1000 or less.

You are asking the wrong people

As a W108 owner, I say "go find one and buy it" but I wouldn't do it thinking you will save any money. They are cool. I like the way they look. Asking us to decide to get a Benz or not is kinda like asking a crack head if they want one more rock.

The formula I use is to evaluate a car is to add the selling price plus everything you will want to fix or repair to bring it up to the condition you would like it to be. Once you have tallied up that number you'll know whether or not to go for it.

Seriously, there is not one W108 or W109 which is economical. If you like tinkering, then you can buy a fixer upper and sink money into it slowly. Or you can pay more and buy a driver, but sooner or later, you'll pay big bills for the simple reason that these cars were the top of the line MB's in their day the prices for new parts will reflect this.

The diesels are somewhat different because so many were made and sold in so many markets that there is now a strong aftermarket supply for parts.

One point that Al didn't mention is that all the cool people drive 108's. Curtis started to explain the formula, but it's even more simple than that. If you have a 108, you're cool; if not, then you're not cool.

Go buy a 108. When you look in the south, they're everywhere. You just need to determine in what condition you want the car and pay the price for it. If you want to spend a grand don't expect a perfect car or one anywhere close to being in "moderate" condition. Likewise, go spend 4-5k and get a car you can enjoy.

Best Regards,

David
