Used radiator vs re-core

I NEED a radiator for my euro spec W116 280SE. The current one was pushed into the fan by a snowbank.

I can secure a "good" used one for a few hundred bucks or have this one re-cored locally for $650. New is $880

Thoughts, advice appreciated.

used vs. recore

A "good used " radiator could be 20 to 30 years old. If this car is your ride, I would strongly advise a recore, unless money is a situation!

The original radiator is probably all metal. A good used one probably will be fine if it is as well. Your current radiator may be repairable if you can find a good old fashoned radiator shop who can solder.

$650 for a re-core seems like waaaay too much! Try this source for a new radiator:

You can get a new, factory NOS radiator from Robert Fenton, owner of European Car Service in San Rafael, CA (just north of San Francisco). He has them in stock. Phone 415-456-4077 or 415-999-0083 pacific time.

This source is from a forum post about 2-3 years old that I saved. Good luck!

... wow. few hundred for used? no pull a parts near you eh?
I'm pretty sure there is still an 80SD in the yard near me and radiators are only like 35 there.
if it looks replaced or it's all metal, I could pull it for ya!

So the difference b/t US 280 rad and a euro is the oil cooler. The euro is somewhat smaller so there can be an oil cooler mounted to the side of it. That is part of the reason it is so expensive to recore. I guess they have to custom order the core for it.

The used one is coming from a fellow in the UK so I am guessing a couple hundred or so with shipping.

If anyone knows one near by or whatever, I am actively looking.

If originality is not an issue, here is how I solved the issue with my 280se.

If the radiators from the 114 M110 cars is the same as the 116 M110's I've got a good radiator--and an oil cooler that can be plumbed separately.

IF the W116 280SE rad is the same as the W126 280SE (euro) rad, there's a good looking one in the boneyard nearby. At least there was 10 days ago when I pinched the M110 engine....let me know...

Thanks for all the offers to help!! A great community. I have a beat on one and will confirm tomorrow. If it turns up nothing, I will be back to call on one of you.

Does anyone have the part number for a W116 280SE euro-spec radiator with oil cooler attachment?

Thank you to everyone here. A fellow enthusiast who came to buy my 500SLC today brought a radiator with him for me. So I just need to have it cleaned and tested but otherwise all set!!
