W110 alternator woes
Hey Guys, i've got a 66 200D, and the alternator does not seem to be working properly. I have 2 batteries that i change out of the benz, whilst one is charging at home (or is charged). But i'm about to install a sound system, and some fog lights to my car and need to have a proper alternator to keep the battery charged, as I'm sure the new additions will draw more power than it normally uses. Any suggestions on how to test the alternator? Thanks in advance!

It's probably the regulator which fortunately can be removed easily with the alternator still in the car. It should only cost about $15, tops, and it is held to the back of the alternator with two screws. Contact Phil at Fastlane for a replacement. They may not have it listed in the online catalog, but he can get it so it's best to give him a ring.
Best Regards, David

This isn't the one for your specific car, but they all pretty much look alike. Also, I may have been off on the price a bit, but I still don't think $20-$25 is bad to get your alternator working again. Best Regards, David

That's the "modern" integral regulator. Your W110 might have one on the inner fender skirt. Look for a electrical connector on the back of the alternator and follow the wires to a metal can.

The alternator is on 35 amps which will run the car fine in stock form. Once you start adding some more modern devices, it won't be able to keep up. Replace it with a later model, such as a W126 80 amp alternator with an internal regulator and you will be fine.
BTW, take the alternator to a parts place and they will check it.
