I'm having a great deal of trouble with this heater box on my 72 280SE 4.5. I have as many connections removed as I can detect and it will wiggle but seems to still be attached somewhere. Also it looks like I might need an OB/GYN to get this monster out of the dash, the upper left hand side protrudes way up there. Only one side of the heater core was attatched to the engine, there being a weird plastic protector on the other side, how could it possibly work with no flow through?oops found the other connection beneath a bracket, doing all this at night and early morning before the sun is up. The box still won't budge, shifts around slightly, the Chiltons suggests unbolting the instrument panel for clearance but doesn't seem to be a possibility on my car.

All I can do on this one is cheer you on. Remember - somebody on the assembly line put it together, so it will come apart.

The box is loose in the confines of the dash. Doesn't seem to be a way to get it out without butchering the box or the dash neither of which appeals to me. Also this is quite unlike the boxes shown in the chiltons MB 68-73. Experience anyone??

The secret of removal for all of you that follow, remove lower dash being careful not to damage the silver temp wire, the a/c unit and lower dash should be moved as a single piece so lay the dash piece across the interior while removing the A/C unit which has in addition to the obvious mounting points, two hidden nuts inside the wheel well. One must be accessed from the interior through the a/c blower motor hole, the other is accessed through removing the wheel well plate behind the tire and is located at the upper interior edge of the power antenna box. Now remove the A/C unit and place absorbent material in the floor board to soak up coolant that will spill from the heater core, slide the heater box to the right by micrometers at a time as it will be close to impossible, be persistent. Remember to disengage wires and such as they snag on the unit. As it clears the trans tunnel it will begin to leak coolant. Extract from the interior and hope you can remember how to get this mess back into something resembling a mercedes.
