I don't think the rust is THAT bad. I don't know what it looks like structurally, but the rockers are present as are the quarters, which are usually the first things to rust behind the floor pans. Remember, most of the 110's and 111's need floors (my 230S is waiting on floors right now...). You can get both floors, from the MB dealership, for like $400. Each floor is half the car, so for $400, plus some of your time welding them in, you'll have new factory floors. If you're good with metal working, you can fabricate your own floors, meaning you'll put some sort of crimping to the metal to add strength and rigidity. In conclusion, you probably shouldn't listen to me since I'm the guy that up until about 5 hours ago wanted to buy a Jaguar XJ8 as a daily driver and put about 35k miles a year on it....

Best Regards,

David

That's what I figure; almost all of these cars have rusty floors, rockers, etc., so it really doesn't matter how rusty those parts are because you'll have to replace them anyway. As long as the framework is there, the rest can be dealt with. Like I said, it will be a long-term project and I don't doubt that I will be able to do the bodywork. I want this car.

This car is worth $300. cash (if you had to pay for it) or free.
The guy should just give it to you....$1500 is insane, pure greed.

Forecast ahead in you mind; how will you feel about this car owning it a year from now, and it is still a project sitting in you driveway/backyard/garage. Will it still be worth it to you? Do you even want it for free?
From what you have done to your other car; you can probably get it going, but there is much more work there than you can even imagine.

Hi

Forgive me if this post sounds a bit negative, but my advice is to let this one pass. I read your agonized posts around your existing 200D when you found the bondo in the trunk and around the rear lights. This wagon that you are looking at is literally falling apart.

If you really want to own one of these in the long term, I'd advise saving until you can buy a much less rusty example from somewhere in the south, even if it needs a drive train re-build. That body looks totally rotted man ... be careful on this one.

I called the owner and left a message on his answering machine. I offered him $500. I'll see what he says.

I definitely want the car because if I get it I want to keep it for the rest of my life. I'll just repair what I can when I am able. Just like with my 300SD, I want to keep it for the rest of my life. And at two cars I would be happy to have that as my limit. I don't think there are any other cars in existence that I would rather own than a W116 300SD and a W110 wagon.

The car is falling apart, that is true. But unlike the 200D, I would be willing to replace all of the rusted metal and then go ahead with rebuilding everything. Though I love the 200D, I don't have enough passion about it to completely restore it. The 200D was advertised as a near show-condition car needing nothing, then I ended up having to rebuild everything anyway and I found a few rust surprises.

With this wagon I know that it needs everything and I'm prepared to rebuild the body, restore the interior, and completely rebuild it mechanically. There is no other car in the world that I would have enough passion to put this much work into, except maybe my W116, but it is not as rare as this wagon.

You just don't see these for sale. Ever.

Parts for the wagon are practically non-existent, but the rest of the heckflosse parts are common.

Buy it, get it running, drive it every now and then. When you get more money, go to town on it. With what you'll ultimately spend on fixing her up, quibbling over $1000 seems rather inane. Hopefully, you'll settle in below $1000.

I always wanted one of those too; anyone can drive a Ponton or a Fintail, but a Fintail wagon? You'll never see another one around.

Right. And the value is tough to determine, but if I had one I would probably not let it go for a low price.

If it weren't a wagon, it would be a nearly worthless parts car. There is the rarity factor that increases the value. And it's true, it really doesn't matter how much it costs to buy a car because the cost of fixing up one is so high that in the big picture it doesn't matter.

Still, I hope to get it for $500. If not, I'll do what I can to get it. I'm in a situation where I recently spent a bunch of money, then missed a week of work being sick, then had an 8-day pay period, so I am short on cash. It would be worth getting a payday loan, as much as I hate being in debt. My 200D has a $1,200 bid currently, so if the car sells it would help greatly.

I'll probably never see another for sale. I know it will be a huge project, but unlike my 200D, I'm willing to cut into it and go to town on replacing the rusted panels and fixing it a little at a time, as I can afford it. Some day, a few years from now, I will have the car of my dreams and I never intend to sell it. I would be happy having my 300SD and the wagon as my only two cars for the rest of my life since they are my two favorite cars.

Here's hoping he'll sell it at a much lower price and that I'll be able to have the money that he wants for it.

Just don't let them get the best of you .

I like this car but I grew up around rusty cars and when I see MOSS growing in the cowl , well.....

These fintail wagons are rare and fetch quite some money, even in bad shape. I would not be surprised if it got over $1500 if posted on eBay. But it's always good if you can get it for less than that.

You should seriously consider grafting all the specific wagon panels onto a solid W110 or 111. It will be cheaper, faster and the end result may be better. You should consider keeping the sedan you have for that, unless it is also rusted. Otherwise there was a guy wanting to get rid of a sound W110 a few days back in the Bay area. Engine not running and car had been hit in the back and repaired earlier in its life. His wife was putting pressure so that he donates it, so you could have a good deal if he still has it: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/vintage-mercedes-benz/1565265-help-home-needed-1967-230-a.html

Wow, that could sure help out with parts! Of course, I feel bad taking apart complete cars like that. I'm going to need quite a bit of donor sheet metal and fenders for sure. I think I already have a set of rust-free rocker panels, so that is a start.

I may have a deal worked out with the owner of the wagon. I should know tomorrow. I hope it works out.
