Be really careful backing up - I'd hate to have to find one of those taillights!

Surprisingly enough, I know of a few sources to buy them new and they are usually about $400 each, which isn't bad considering the taillights for the sedans can cost that much in like new condition. There is a right and left side, even though they look the same. If I had the money I would buy all of the NOS wagon taillights that I knew of for spares. I think they are currently no longer available from Mercedes, but I hear they were around $800 each. Then again, I wonder how much it would cost to have them replicated.

The name is Rene Hinneberg, whom, from what I researched, could be an actor, but appears to own a film company. I wish I had more information on the history of the car.

Congratulations!!!

You have just won a car which is worth many many times more than your other finny.
http://www.heckflosse.nl/uni.htm
you have been here no doubt to see the history of these rare cars?
I have always wanted one too (for over 30 years in fact) so last week I bought this and towed it home. it started life as a W110 200 (190C ) and was repowered with a OM 615 912 (220 D) and four speed. The rear is a station wagon tail gate and roof from a 1964 GM holden EH.
The body is pretty good but has been stored for 20 years and the brakes etc are all needing work.
The engine was rebuilt but i need to redo it as it has no oil pressure . Using std. bearings on a reground crank might be responsible ..ha ha . in your shoes i would use the other car as donor to build a nice wagon or even use the pics in the keckflosse site to reference the removal of the roof of the car and build a new wagon..

Could you take some detail pics of the rear seat sometime? mine has an adapted sedan seat and the universals had a split seat which i think I can make. ....Or use a W123 wagon seat. I also wonder what they did to the shock mounts. Mine are still sticking into the load space and yours look to have been altered so that they have been relocated somewhere else.
Being a 230S you can fit a OM617 easily in there although it may be more vualable with the original type of engine. You also need to rent a shed someplace to keep it out of that wet weather and work on it without upsetting your neighbors...

How do you refuel that Universal? Behind the plate number as on the sedans?

I like that custom wagon! That's one way of having a Universal if you can't find one.

I think my shock mounts and rear trunk area are the same as the sedan; they just have the boards on top of them. I'll take more pictures of the rear seat sometime. Apparently the split rear bench is a rare option as most of them were one-piece.

Yep, the fuel is filled behind the license plate area. Oh, I just remembered that there was a spare wheel in the spare tire well. I wonder if it is a factory 15"...

They made Crayford wagons in the W116 body style as well. I thought it would be cool to have one, but they are less practical than the W110/W111 wagons and I'm happy with my W116 sedan as it is.

A friend of mine has the only 6.9 liter wagon built.
and Gordon Balfour haynes mentioned in the blog is another mate. Gordon has a Crayford W116 but it's pretty scruffy and really needs a complete rebuild.
The universals all came with 15" wheels to cope with expected heavy loads. if those hubcaps are 15", they are very rare items.
