722.112 Transmission wont shift cold

My 79 280CE has not wanted to shift gears when cold for a number of years now. I always have to let the car idle for about 5 min in the morning before it will shift gears by itself. The colder it is outside the longer it takes for the car to shift by itself.

The trans will go into D and R no problem when cold.

It will not shift into 3rd gear cold unless it has warmed up for 5 min or so.

I can put the trans in 1st gear(L) and move the shifter up to S and it will shift from 1 to 2 perfectly, but it refuses to shift by itself into 3rd gear until its warmed up.

I have checked the vacuum modulator and its good, the control pressure rod is also adjusted properly. Fluid/filter is new and its at the correct level.

Im guessing its a issue inside the valve body, stuck valve or something. Anyone else have this rather annoying problem with their transmission?

Thanks

Just to follow up with this old thread and add some closure for anyone else who might have this problem.

The tranny in my 280CE hasnt wanted to upshift on its own when dead cold for about 6 or 7 years now.

Last week i put 1/2 a quart of trans-X in the tranny and after 3 days of driving the problem has completely vanished. The tranny upshifts to 3rd gear when cold like normal.

Im thinking the trans-x cleaned a valve or something in the valve body which might have been sticking when cold, i dunno.
