Cleaning/Sealing a fuel tank
Hello, has anyone used a Por-15 type product or a company to clean/Seal a fuel tank. 1965 MB 220SE, tank is solid but had old fuel in it to long.

I used the KBS kit on my W124 300D tank which was rusty internally. Worked great.
|
I'm worried because I can't seem to get a metal rod to go very far into the return port on the outside of the tank. I think a professional cleaning might be in order.
|
What I did was I used kitchen cleaner with high concentration to soak over night. The next day I placed some sand and rocks to shake it. This process I repeated many many times.
|
I used KBS aqua clean on my tank - it appeared to work well. Drying the tank out afterwards took forever here in Holland though. Even with compressed air etc etc etc
|
I see a tube in the bottom of the tank that I think is the main line. Any idea how long the return line is? Thank you.

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/Fuel/Tank In fact, the Technical area is quite useful for our cars. |

I've read some posts or a web site that had concerns about sealers and the current crop of fuels. Seems that the alcohol or some other additive can degrade some types of sealer and cause serious problems down the road. I would do some research before pouring stuff in the tank.

I'll look at the stainer and go from there, Thanks all.

To do the KBS system you completely remove the tank from the car, you're not anywhere near the car, or the lines when you seal the tank.

Just make double, triple sure that air blows through the small lines before the sealant sets. I would get the new pieces of hose for the tank connections and just blow through them, thru the internal pipes.

I am working on cleaning my tank for my '72 SL now, I just blow through the lines between each step.
I add a 4th step, I start by doing a few shakes and cleans with hose water and dish soap to knock off the easy to get crud, that way the $70 chemicals work on the hard stuff. I am working on Step 1 (2) which is the KBS Aqua Kleen, my tank had a decent amount of flakes floating around in it. If you can't find someone to do it, greyhound my girlfriend and I your tank, I'd be happy to do it for you. |
