280C Combo Switch Problem
My '73 280C has the normal problem of the turn signals not staying "engaged" during a turn. Unfortunately, in VA this will cause it to fail its safety inspection. I found another used one - believe a later model for a great price that works perfectly, except that the wipers will not turn off. All three wiper speeds work.
The switch is disengaging and opening the contacts correctly. I investigated and noted that there are two addtional wires running up the stalk to the wiper controls in addition to blue, red and black in the orginal- they are green and grey. Has anyone encountered this, and knows what wire(s) to remove to avoid getting constant power to the wipers? TIA

I didn't realise that was a common problem. With the switch on my '69 230, I took the dremel tool and a very small bit and made a bit more of a land where the pin sits so it is more inclined to stay there for a bit.
Another thing that I find helps, is to pull the rubber boot from the column, it was counter productive to keeping the signal on, and it was worse the colder it was. Hope that helps. Mark |

In my 1974 280 the turn signal doesn't stay engaged and the second wiper speed doesn't work. How hard is it to replace the whole stick?
Thanks for your help,

It's easy but expensive. Your wiper problem may be in the relay which is located in the motor.
You can check out the contacts in the switch by very carefully removing the pin that holds the sliding part of the switch on. It runs vertically. If you look at the big connector that the wires from the switch runs to, I believe that power comes in on pin 11 and then 12, 13, or 14 get power depending on the wiper speed. You can also check at the pins on the wiper motor. I will take a look at the Dremel repair but the newer switch is a much better design, and it would be nice to use it.

To remove mine is the same as in this post?
Turn Signal Switch I found a used one that I think will fix the problem. I think a new one costs $220.00 or so.

Yes. But you need to loosen the connectors that hold two wires to the switch and then get under the driver's dash on the left to unplug the big connector. Then slide the connector out through the "tunnel" on the steering column. Reassemble in reverse order. I would recommend plugging the new switch in before you install it to make sure you can shut the wipers off.
