220S parked outside friends' Porsche shop.

I was visiting a friends shop this past week and found this 220S. Not sure what year or chassis, but was impressed with the lines and craftsmanship. The wood work around the windows and dash is very impressive.

Interestingly, it has three pedals. Perhaps 3 on the tree?

I didnt see under the hood.

Any idea chassis or year?

I guess I could google "Mercedes 220S" or "Wiki Mercedes 220S"

Four on the tree - it's a ponton made from the mid-50's to late 50's. Read all about them at www.mbzponton.org.

A 1957 model of this car was the very first Mercedes I ever drove. My first wife's roommate had one that her grandfather had given her. When I came into the picture the car was not running. I cleaned up the fuel system and got it running. Drove it from Atlanta to Savannah one weekend and was pleasantly surprised at how well that car drove and the mileage that it got. Cruised flawlessly at 80 mpg all the way down and back. The time period was around 1984-1985.

Which shop?
I thought it was tough to find some parts for my W114, I can't imagine doing the same for that car. Really neat shape though.

All things considered, it's not that hard to find parts for them. I've had mine for fifteen years and rarely have trouble finding what I need. We've got a great Yahoo group of almost 900 owners and someone always seems to have what you need.

I find it easier finding parts for Pontons than later models. A tough little car ,they are great .Look at any old photos of the middle east and all you see are ponton Diesels ,where many are still around today.

The first Mercedes that I ever rode in was a very similar 1956 220S which belonged to Marian Spellman, the noted singer on WLW-TV in Cincy. It was equipped with the Hydrak clutch and could be shifted without use of the clutch pedal by just holding up on the column mounted shift lever. Her son could squeal the tires in 2nd with this arrangement.

Later a friend here in Okla had a very similar cream colored 219. Great memories!!
