72 350 sl

i just got a 72 350sl it's perfect red with black interior. and it has it's original red hub caps and both tops. my question is this i believe this to be the first run of this model in the US. did this year have a wood dash option? and did it have floor mats that had the 350sl imprinted in them. i just bought my two benz in december 01. i always like them and the opportunity came up so i did. the red 72 doesn't need a thing done to it everything is perfect i'd just like to have wood if it doesn't effect the integrity of the model.

Wood was indeed an option.

The wood set has to be matched to the options on your dash (w/AC or without, etc).

Also, do you have a US spec car with an M117, or a euro car with an M116? The euro car is definitely more fun.

the model number for my 72 350sl i think is a 107. it has a/c ps pb pw. it apparently did not come with wood. my friend makes wood dashes so i'm thinking about doing it if it keeps it authentic to the model. i also want to find out if the floor matts had the 350sl logo on them??? they only made the 350 for a couple of years so any add ons should be true to the actual options for 72. tks much!

Craig,

The 350SL for the european market had a 3.l M116 v8 motor.
The 350SL for the US market had a 4.5l M117 v8 motor. The car was rebadged as a 450SL the following year.

On your door is a metal plate with a chassis code, ie 107.044 or something similar. What is that number ?

Also, armed with a flash light, look BEHIND the cylinder head on the driver's side of the motor. You will find that there is a big 1" wide area of the block visible back there that has a number stamped on it. That's your engine number. It will either be a 116.98-something or a 117.98-something.

You will need BOTH numbers when ordering just about any parts on the car. So, now is a good a time as any to collect them.

Of course, if you have the data card that goes with the car (a single sheet of thin cardboard about 3"x6") those numbers are printed on it.

Smile 72 350sl

it took me a few days but i finally got to look for the numbers you suggested

i look behind the head but i did not find any numbers. i did see an area but no #'s. i did get the following numbers.

this is from a plate in the engine comp. over the grill
467 491 513 585 593
56411568m6
170 044 127
7b07147191239
this is a california emisson plate:
107044-12-003364
it mentions mb model 280\l4.5 208sel 276 cu in
it shows various timing #'s
this is from the door plate
vin# 107044-12-003364
model 107 mfg germany
mfg in 2/72
4600 gvwr

is any of this useable in identifying what options etc: was available at the time of manufacture??

also is there any place on the net that has a listing of numbers etc: that describes feaures of the cars?

tks much. any input or info is greatly appreciated

Those 3 digit numbers on that first plate are some of the options on your car.

The 107.044 means it's a 4.5, not a 3.5, so it's the US spec car.
