280 head vs. 250 head

Does anybody know the design difference between a 250 head and a 280 head. I'm looking at a car (250SE) that I believe has the original block, but has a 280 head.

No big deal?

Michael

250 and 280 are made up terms. Is it a M110 or a M130?

Now we're talking. Let me do some research but I bet you quite a few of the guys here (Alibassi, Mercmad, Tomguy, Tom W., just to mention a couple) know the answer. Give them a bit of time to see your post and they'll have your answer.

I remember the chain case being wider on the injected model.

I don't know the answer to this but I have a 220 or 230 head in my garage. If it is the single cam six all the heads are very similar and somewhat interchangible I believe.

This might help you: cylinder head identification.

250SE and 230SL heads will interchange but a 280SE head won't. There are two diffferent 280SE/SL heads, early and late and they won't interchange at all.

That poses another question. Many of the later 280SL's that I have seen (Including mine) have 280/SE on the casting.
The car with the 250 block has a head with a casting that says ony "280". (Oh, and it's injected)

I put the head from my 1970 250/8 on a block that was supposed to also be from a 250/8. It more or less bolted up but the timing chain could not be set correctly. It was half a tooth off no matter how I put it together. The car ran OK but didn't idle all that well.

if the engine is an M130 then it is a 280. The 250 is an M129.

WRT the timing chain. Once the head is milled, you have a timing issue with the chain appearing to be stretched. That is fixed with an "offset woodruff key" or by putting a shim under the cam towers. -CTH

I hadn't thought of that, that is probably what was wrong.
