Help Before I Screw Something Up
I'm reinstalling the original style Pierburg fuel pump. The FSM calls for a gap between the plunger pin and the cam at BDC. I measured the gap using the prescribed procedure and there was none. The manual says to change the spacers at the "sealing flange" to achieve the gap, but then doesn't label the two flanges very well in the illustration.
Is the "sealing flange" the block to pump conncection or is it where the two parts of the pump go together? I figured that it was where the two halves join and had to entirely remove the spacer to get a gap at the cam. But there is hardly any stroke now and I thought I'd better ask before I break a fuel pump that is very hard to replace.

I apologize for taking so long to make a response. On my 220, the 1/4" spacer goes between the fuel pump and the tappet sections. There is only a very thin gasket between the engine and the tappet section. Hope this helps. Bob

Thanks, Bob. That's how it came off my car so that's how I put it back on. Even though I didn't have the gap the spec called for. I did add 2 paper gaskets to the pump/block interface but I doubt it made a significant difference in the cam/plunger gap. At any rate, the car runs fine. So if it ain't broke...

Happy I could help. It is always nice to have a second opinion.
