71 280SE 3.5 What is this part?

What is the device that is connected to the fuel pump, is it some sort of filter?

Thanks,

Accumulator valve. It's there as a buffer for fuel system surges.

It's actually a anti bubble container. It is connected in such a way that a small amount of fuel is allowed to flow back to the pump to keep it cool and prevent bubbling .
Djets do not have or need an acumulator.

Bubble Container

Do bubble containers go bad? What are the symptoms?

Thanks,

Dave

engine trouble

I had posted anther thread, 280se 3.5 engine trouble, my car has was dieing on me. Several suggestions were made, some indicated fuel pump or filter issues, that is why I wanted to know what this was and what it may do if going bad.

Thanks

In the picture your pump looks fairly recent but I cannot see the filter. normally,a Djet pump set up,the filter is above the pump. Is it out of the pictures range.?? if you haven't changed it,it's time to do it.

As far as I know, the filter is up front left of the radiator for the 3.5 coupes.

I have the same set up as in the picture for my car (also W111 280SE 3.5 coupe).

That's a funky looking fuel pump. I heard that D-Jet fuel pumps are different between the 3.5 and the 4.5. I guess this is what the 3.5 pump looks like.

re. the filter location, yes thats right ,Same location as on the 6.3 . I had forgotten about that. 3.5 coupes are very rare here ( not as rare as cabs with only 68 RHD being made).
re. the pump, yes Al,the 3.5 has that extra port for the bubble thing.
