'65 190D Column Shift Problem

I acquired my father's 65 190D when he fell ill with dementia. It has a 4 speed manual shift on the column. I have repaired the clutch slave and master and got the car going. It shifted fine with a fair amount of slop in the mechanism. One day, it moved forward when I attempted to shift into reverse. It is as if when pulling back the lever, whatever puts it in line to select reverse is not happening. Does anyone know of a good source for a repair manual that would show how to repair this - or an idea of what I might do to troubleshoot?

I've laid down under the car and watched it work and it is not at all clear how it all functions. The levers on the back of the transmission seem to be moving, but there also seems to be quite a bit of play in the mechanism at the base of the steering column - most of which is hidden from view.

Any idea how to remove the steering column and how difficult that is?

Thanks, Dave

Dave,
You need the 190 service manual. There's another manual called Passenger cars starting 1959-- but it is not as complete as the original 190 manual. The Ponton steering column is the one in your fintail, as well.
Other than that, how does it run?

I ask this because I may have a spare steeroing column, am not sure yet-- but only as a last resort.

maybe the guys at the classic center can get you a copy of the FSM

It sounds like your shift rod washers are toast. At least, I would replace these first and go from there. An easy and cheap fix. After all these years, they are most certainly shot.

Check out this thread for some DIY information.

M-100 Message Board - Horn "short" in column change cars.

Note that the tutorial is for a different chassis, right wheel drive and your car does not have the collapsible bowl behind the steering wheel. But the principle is the same. Also do a search. This topic has been explored previously.

There are also some socket bushings at the front to the shift rods which will need to be replaced. So, get the rear rubber bushings too.

Look at your shift lever and you will see a large nut. Remove this and if there are plastic bits, then you will need a new bushing because the original one is shot. If the column rod is loose at the lower end, where it goes into the steering plate bolted to the chassis, you will need two rubber-plastic bushings to keep the long rod centered.

I have replaced ALL bushings through the dealer parts dept and the cost was 42.00, so not a deal breaker

My finnie was having similar issues and the rubber/nylon bushings were replaced. That tightened things up and was all I needed done to the shift linkage other than replacing the grommet on the side of the transmission, it came off from wear so go ahead and do this while you're down there, cheap and easy fix and will spare you another headache from being stuck on the side of the road when it pops off.
