Bad remote booster? (220b)

Well... My fintail has needed a slight topping up of DOT4 every few miles, but I never suspected this was coming. Went to move the car, brake pedal went straight to the floor, and there was very low fluid in the reservoir along with a big puddle of fluid under the remote booster in the drivers fender.

I know '63 was the changeover year for w111s, and I have the single circuit system. Oddly Kim was exhibiting no symptoms of a bad booster (really firm pedal) but Ive never had a car with a single circuit system and a remote booster. Could the master cylinder have failed allowing brake fluid into the vacuum chamber of the booster?

Can you help me shed some light on this Comerades? Normally I just go to my service manual but I don't have anything for her yet other than a few old sixties and seventies copies of aftermarket rebuild books.

The hydraulic line goes from the master cyl to the remote booster 'slave' cyl. The problem could be a bad main seal in the remote master cyl and the remote booster has filler up with brake fluid.

You will have to investigate this and fix the remote master cyl. You may also have to overhaul the remote booster. Then since you are doing all that, check all the brake hoses and then the slave cyls at each brake.

Pontons and early Fintails use the same brake system. 1963 was the changeover year from 1st version to 2nd version, dual circuit and disc brakes were the major upgrades.

That was all the information I needed. Although it does provide me with a very tenuous reason to buy a ponton... My tortured reasoning? If I can understand the brakes how hard can the rest of the car be? just don't tell DawTwo. Or I'll probably end up with another old car.

Interesting and somewhat on topic question... As a 220b could Kim be considered an E class, or would she be an S class because she's a w111?

I believe it would be an E-class because when the W111 was first introduced there was no W110. The W110 was the replacement for the 220b in about 1961.

That's exactly the answer I was hoping to hear! that brings us up to six E classes and a w126. I wonder if Daw_Two's Ponton is a w120, or if we can find a way to make it into a w120.

Someone mention my name? I've got a brake booster rebuild kit in my NOS parts --- not for sure which car it fits. Check your PMs.
