Very nervous to purchase a W108 1968 280SE sight unseen. I am from East Coast and the car is located in Los Angeles. Would appreciate a referral to a shop that is good at pre-purchase inspection of vintage Mercedes. Not looking forward to find any major surprises.

And much advice on the forum, what is your first impression, and are there pictures, can you drive it to San Diego?

Very sad that I was outbid by three other person at the final minutes before auction closing. So many buyers out there to snatch up W108 these days. This is my third online auction attempt that I lost during final bidding. Very frustrating.

Probably better to deal locally in Boston from this point on, so that I can see the car in person before putting an offer, and don't have to compete with so many online buyers.

Being able to deal locally is always convenient but I would be very worried about rust on a Boston 108. In that respect your SoCal vehicles will usually be better.

Somehow I feel it is morally wrong to ship a rust free California example to the rust hell of the Northeast.

Google "ebay sniping" you will find articles and videos on how to best bid online, like this one. Sounds stupid but it has been proven effective.

That's how I got my coupe 10 years ago! Didn't know there was a name for it. My trick is to have two windows open. Keep one for the auction clock and the other one for my bid at the last second.

Problem is not that others snipe, but main problem is that your bids are too low...
