The sound in the rear is probably the trailing arm link. Replace both sides at the same time or individually a week or two apart. 20 minute job to do both sides.

Noise in the rear could also be broken tie rod connector, mine had this.

I have a 76 240d , w115 body, want to know if there is the auto transmission key to set the modulator to shift tighter? I crawled around , but cant see anything.
I was able to set the key on several other models, but not on this w115 model though. it does slip a bit when shift from 2-3 , 3-4 . Or shift at higher rpm so it wont slip as easy. any advice will be appreciated. I cannot see any linkage to delay the shifting like other models or domestic cars. The 300sd has a cable one can tighten it so it will shift at a higher rpm. Thanks in advance.

One problem with the 115 is that the three bolts holding the steering box to the frame tend to crack. This allows your steering box to 'flex' so this is something that needs to be addressed.
I put in new bolts from Mercedes, but they cracked in a few days. I finally solved the problem by putting in the proper sized bolts from a company called 'Unbrakeo'. The bolts had a sheer strength of 330,000 pounds each. There is also a plate that can be installed to reinforce the frame in this area. |

And that clunking noise when you make a turn.....
I replaced the rear end with one I had. Third member and both axles. I don't know what the problem was, but the clunking stopped. |
